Is Clinton ahead in the popular vote?
Is Clinton ahead in the popular vote?

(CNN) — Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said Wednesday Hillary Clinton has overcome Barack Obama in the total popular vote.

“Senator Clinton took the lead in the popular vote last night because voters believe she is the candidate best able to beat John McCain and lead our country," McAuliffe said.

Is he right? That depends on which measure of the popular vote is used.

Four different scenarios of the total popular vote have been kicked around: (1) only counting primary contests without factoring in Florida and Michigan, whose contests were not sanctioned by the national party, (2) counting primary and caucus contests without Florida and Michigan, (3) counting primaries and contests and Florida but not Michigan, and (4) counting all primaries and caucuses including Florida and Michigan.

Clinton trails in all four counts, but by significantly different margins. In the first scenario she trails by by about 397,000, in the second she's behind 699,000, in the third she has a 405,000 vote deficit, and in the fourth scenario she trails by 77,000 votes.

The fourth scenario does not give Obama any votes out of Michigan, where he did not appear on the ballot.

The only scenario in which Clinton would appear to have the lead is a fifth scenario that only counts primary states – including both Florida and Michigan – and excludes any votes cast in the party’s caucuses. In that count, Clinton currently holds a lead of about 225,000 votes.

Hey Nick in Las Vegas -

If Clinton stands - there will be so many HATERS of Clinton as she has revealed her real self in this election process

- a cheater
- a liar
- game changer
- rule changer
- power monger
- divisive (dividing the country along racial and gender lines)
- no ethical / moral standards

I lost all my respect for Clintons including Bill Clinton.

Ryan   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Clinton really is delusional. If Hillary is all about counting every vote then why would she exclude hundreds of thousands of voters who voted in caucuses? How does that even make any sense? Let's count two states that didn't follow rules, don't give Obama any votes at all in MI (even though Clinton got only 54% with him not even on the ballot), and then exlude over a quarter of the states that voted and followed the rules for no reason.

Linda   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Wait, so you will count the states that broke the DNC rules, but not count the caucus states that followed the rules? Unbelieveable!!!

If you are going to stay in then be honest with the race.

And Nick, what was the point of voting if you discount the math and process that puts Obama over the top???

fred   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

she crazy, she needs to go back to school, she cant add

Rob   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

The fact that Obama was scared enough to hold Edwards In his pocket until after Hillary crushed him In WV tells me she is more of a threat to him then his supporters want to admit. Just the same old political game. He just has Edwards wait to cushion the blow. "looking to the future" Obama? I think not.

Lydia   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Terry McAulife's ADHD rants and he and Hillary's belligerent march on a road that is running out of bricks is bordering on the pathological and is becoming quite scary. There is a thin line between sanity and insanity. They are both dangerously close to crossing it.

DANIELLE   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

i TAKE THAT BACK.

Mark   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Sorry, I left out 2 important words. That should have read:

… the "total popular vote" FOR OBAMA should include another 600,000 votes from caucus states that nobody is counting.

steve   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Sen. Clinton Please, how ridiculous, Laughable, delusional, dumb and stupid!

smw   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Nick in Las Vegas is asking a very odd question. "The math" is also known as "votes cast." So let's rephrase his question: "Should he be the nominee just because of votes cast for him?" Um…

Larry in TX   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

The audacity of hope vs. the audacity of hype.

Roger B from Portland, OR   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Yet another example of the Clinton campaign putting their fingers in their ears and humming loudly. So all those states that held caucuses and not primaries don't count? So much for "every vote counts". How about "only votes for me count". What is this, Russia?

Fi   May 14th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

@ Nick in Las Vegas

It's completely a matter of the math. The nominee needs a certain number of delegates at the Democratic National Convention. There are no other factors.

Do you even understand how this process works?!!?

randy   May 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

It's kind of funny now that it doesn't matter.

Carol, WI   May 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

Just when I was about ready to make a donation to the joint Dem fund to help Hiillary repay her debts this same old tired argument comes out again. The Hillary campaign blames Obama for disenfranchising the FL/MI voters (even though that is not true) yet they disenfranchise all caucus voters. Don't people see the irony in that?

On a separate note, if I start to see Hillary supporters back off the 'I'm going to vote McCain if Hillary does not get the nomination' rhetoric I will gladly contribute to the joint fund that will repay her campaign debt.

DANIELLE   May 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

I’m democrat but will NEVER EVER vote for Obama, because:
1. Obama has never done any job from starting to the end
2. He is a walkie-talkie
3. He has no political ideas at all
4. He was rised by Chicago mafia politicians
5. His wife Michelle takes bribes
6. His portfolio is thinner than a sheet
7. He ruined the party with all those betrayers like Richardson, Pelosi, Kennedy ans so on

So if Clinton is not chosen or the results are falsified (as Dean & Co try hard) then I vote for Nader or write-in Clinton

David L., Enfield, CT   May 14th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

At the beginning of this Primary contest I liked both candidates. Although I was an Obama supporter, I would have voted for Clinton had she gotten the nomination.

Now all that has changed. After the dirty, slimy, politics as usual campaigning the Clintons have done I will never think of them the same way. I now see them for what they really are. They have no integrity, dignity, or ethics. She is so obsessed, blinded by her own ambition and out of control ego that she is borderline mentally ill.

I am not the only person who feels this way. My family and some co-workers have been totally turned off for good by the Clintons ruthless, dirty campaigning. They are disgusted by her now. She is thought of as a sore loser who will not concede until she is carried out bodily at the convention.

If she gets the nomination, I will not vote for the first time in my life. I know others as well who will sit this one out if she steals the nomination. She has lost, she needs to accept that. Just because it is her dream, doesn't mean it's the American peoples dream. We need someone with intregrity.

Michael   May 14th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Sad that there's a lot of people out there who believe this "fifth scenario." It's ridiculous. And to Nick in Las Vegas– yes, Obama should win because of the math. That is the system, that is how it works. Superdelegates are part of that math, they are there to overturn the vote of the people if they feel necessary… and even they now are leaning towards Obama. This race is over.

Seeing that his voters went to Clinton…..what exactly is he trying to accomplish…….????

JJ   May 14th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

I'm sorry but this is why Senator Clinton gets so much negative talk about her. This is exactly the reason why because of statements like this. So you want to count the votes in Florida and Michigan and leave out the thousands of voters in Iowa, Kansas, Nevada, Washington etc etc. She continues to mock the Democratic party and their voters. The campaign either thinks people are stupid or are just downright delusional.

Fuzzy and Corrupt Math: I am so glad she and her advisers will not be goin gto the White house.

Okay, she's leading by what? If Michigan and Florida's flubbed primaries were counted? I live in Florida, most of the Democrats stayed home. I keep hoping she'll just accept defeat and help the Democrats win, but she is so selfish she cant just let go.

Obamanian   May 14th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

Oh wow! She's really trying. "I'm ahead by my own(biased) counts"…she is too desperate, I don't know how her supporters are NOT seeing this. It's ok Hill. Obama will STILL win anyway…she needs to leave

LOL,

Hillary's campaign is becoming almost laughable. Again, more half-truths. Nick, I'm sad to say, but it appears Hillary's campaign is discounting your voice (and vote) in the Caucus state of Nevada to make her numbers "appear" better than they actually are.

Enough   May 14th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Maybe we can use her math to balance the budget!
Also, how is she the best if 1) she can't obtain enough financial support to support her own campaign 2) her experience is based upon being first lady of Arkansas and the US 3) she can't win over independants who will flock to McCain rather than support her?

Rich   May 14th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

This woman is unbelievable.

She has the nerve to come up with these projections? How can she look herself in the mirror each day?

So, let me understand this…if she was the nominee and John McCain beat her in the GE, how will she change the count of the electoral votes? Hillary has turned out to be a real disgrace to the Democracy of this country.

And not only should Barack not ask her to be the VP, but under no circumstances should he pay any of her self inflicted debt.

When people say she deserves to stay in because she fights for us, I will never understand how people can see that and say that after all the lies she has told and been exposed for during this campaign.

God help us all and please help Hillary Clinton come to a place of reality.

scott C   May 14th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

If you count Michigan and Florida without counting the caucus states then Clinton is ahead by 29,000 votes, certainly not over 200,000.

If you don't count the caucus states then it is just as bad as ignoring MI and FL, it is essentially robbing four states of their say, and THEY voted fairly.

If you count Michigan and Florida AND the caucus states then Obama is leading by 80,000+

Even so, you can't give him ZERO popular vote in Michigan, so the number is actually much higher.

if Clinton can't do simple math, then how can she run our country?

No Clinton in 2008   May 14th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

Ridiculous, this woman and her campaign are absolutely nuts. Why don't they just crown her in August and spare America a November vote!!!

Ross in Indiana   May 14th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

This is just silly. If they want to "count everybody" then they can't make their own defenition of everybody. McAuliffe would probably find a way to say that pawns can move anywhere on a chess board. They don't seem to understand that when you sign up for a set of rules those are what you have. i wonder how he would argue at a blackjack table. Maybe bust is at 19 or 23?

She is pathetic, unAmerican, and would be a horrible choice for VP.

And the bad part is, she's now behaving as if the three point line IS closer, so she DOES have a higher score and that everyone should agree with her, even though we all know where the three point line really is.

I want to respect you Senator Clinton, but these kinds of things make it hard to do…

TSD, Houston, TX   May 14th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

To Nick in Las Vegas,

Millions of voters voted for Barack Obama, that's why he is ahead. He has been selected by millions of voters in this country, not the party. Those delegates are his because of me, my family, my friends and millions of others in states all over the country.

HRC is delusional. But, whatever helps her sleep at night, I'm not one to stop her.

Marie in Ohio   May 14th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

I can't seem to get a pro-Hillary comment posted - why is that?

This race is far from over. Hillary is the only democratic candidate that can beat John McCain. She has won a huge number of popular votes and the large states like CA,NY,TX,OH, etc. Whatever the scenario, she is correct that all the voices of voters should be heard, and this should not be decided in a back room by the superdelegates. If they do that, I AM voting for McCain! And who cares about John Edwards' endorsement - another loser!

San Fran Loves Obama!   May 14th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

The Hillary campaign will stop at nothing taking all desperate measures - it's over. MOVE ON we have a nominee! And, please do not put Hillary on the ticket -

White women for Obama!

OBAMA/EDWARDS - 2008!!!!

Orwellian   May 14th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Yes, Nick. Clearly she would perform better against McCain.
She is only losing the primary, the popular vote, and has performed poorer in polls matching her up against McCain than Obama.
But seriously, what alternate universe do Clinton supports live in?

David   May 14th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

LIES, LIES, LIES. The nominee is elected not selected.

Jerry   May 14th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

"figures never lie, but liars often figure"
Mrs. Clinton, do the honorable thing and quit the campaign and try to do good work in the Senate.

Bryan   May 14th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

She is playing the number game again. She should go Vegas. It's just too much now she needs to go.

Ray from Gainesville VA   May 14th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Obama supporters lets stop responding to these blogs negatively towards Sen Clinton and her campaign. Sen Obama is going to get the nomination so lets move on from here.

Obama'08

Hillary announces she has won the general election!

Ralph   May 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

I have been a Dem for over 50 years, and will vote Mccain in Nov if Hillary is pushed out by all those old Geasers in washington

Tanis   May 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Correct!!

Rebel   May 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Well, at this moment John Edwards is speaking at an Obama event in Michigan and he is about to endorse Obama. That should tally about 19 pledged delegates to the Obama camp. I would love and EDWARDS-OBAMA ticket! Edwards was going to be my choice if he was still in the race because I didn’t think Obama would come this far.

Zee   May 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Clinton has lost. Everyone in the old media is too delusion or too in bed with Washington to report this obvious fact. This country is in shambles.

Anonymous   May 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Florida and Michigan clearly mater, but not states that hold caucuses. By the way, don't feed on CNN's story that the party is divided. Just remember that the Republicans had to settle with John McCain. We're still in a battle over which cannidate we like MORE.

B, Illinois   May 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

If an a delusional politician faux cries in the woods, does anybody care?

Tom   May 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

NIck,

In this case, yes it is all about the delegates. The supers can decide how they want and so far, theyahve decided Barack. Sorry. In the next round it is about electoral votes, which again does not take into account national popular vote. So keep up with the arguments, you might get one that is rational.

rw   May 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Go Hillary!
John Edwards -loser
Al Gore- loser
John Kerry-loser

Maybe Obama will get John Edwards to go the black community since he NEVER does.

You Obama people are getting duped like Bush did the GOP.
You folks are the down of the party.

Dayahka   May 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

You're talking reality; Clinton is into fantasy: there, she's way ahead of everyone, sort of a female version of Walter Mitty, great military and political hero, champion of the poor.

Tyler in Raleigh, NC   May 14th, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Nick in Vegas: If the nominee is supposed to be Selected, why do we have Primaries at all??

By Clinton's measure, the primaries are a meaningless beauty contest or a 3rd world farce. The one who gets most votes, delegates, states and plays by the rules DOES NOT WIN.

The winner is the one that is supposed to be most "electable" even though they are BEHIND in every metric. If you were the best candidate for the party, why can you not win the primary for that party by the rules that were set out by the party?

Deano in NYC   May 14th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

Nick, can you honestly trust someone who will go to our(Democratic Party) arch nemsis 'FOX NEWS' and say McCain or I will make a better president than Obama? Now, that is the lowest of the low? Not even Slick Willy did that in his run?

Matt   May 14th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

Nick in Vegas–

What else do we have? The math is, really, a measure of how people voted. She is behind any way that you count. So what you're really asking is "should he win just because he won?"

I get being sad about your candidate losing. I even understand not believing that other people don't agree with you; God knows I can't imagine voting the way our country did the last two elections. However, unless I can prove faulty counting, I don't get to use a new metric to decide elections; they have a name for governments that SELECT candidates. They ain't democracies, man.

Ed Rodriguez   May 14th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

It is unfortunate that while so many other LIFE catastrophies are occuring, we are still focusing millions of dollars on electing our next leader. It is purely shamefull, and hope that the winner of this so called RACE will really do something about the real things in LIFE…

Liar, Liar, plants on fire.   May 14th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

She is delusional.

There is a system in place. It's call "voting". The voters are speaking load and clear. So just because you say "many voters don't feel strongly in support of Obama", doesn't make it so. The math is reflective of the votes and the system in place.

Why do we have to educate the Clinton supporters? The comments being said leave your intellence to be questioned.

Sue   May 14th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

The Clinton machine just zings this out to get the Edwards endorsement off the top of the Political Ticker. I don't know what points it gives them, since CNN effectively explains how convoluted their claim is.

Anita from Arizona   May 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Nick in Las Vegas,

That's how we elect our officials, popular vote. Majority rules. The nominee is not SELECTED they are ELECTED.

R   May 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

I'm really getting worried. Are they going to do anything about Michigan and Florida? Will the voters there vote for Obama? This needs to be resolved as soon as possible. I honestly to think the Obama campaign realize how serious this is in the general election. NOTHING is being done.

YouAreAMoron   May 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Yeah, that's right. Let's just ignore the majority of the people. Let's let some delusional minority SELECT Hillary Clinton over Obama. This makes perfect sense.

Frankie   May 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

What Obama has failed to do is convince blue-collar workers that he is presidential material. Obama is a wonderful person but can he get us out of this mess??? He sounds convincing but I still don't see him winning in November, Hillary Clinton does lead in the popular votes and so did Al Gore in the 2000 election. Although I supported both Gore and Kerry; what the democrats failed to do in the past 2 presidential elections is choose a strong candidate. I believe Hillary Clinton is the stronger of the two candidates.

Joshua College Station Texas   May 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Now I think I'm 'choking up on the trail'. Give me a break!

None of the scenarios consider the caucus-only states, because there is no widely-accepted metric for converting caucus results to popular vote numbers. If they somehow could, Clinton would be even further behind.

What a joke! I'm laughing, I really am.

Lisa   May 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

It's funny that Obama is campaigning in Michigan. I wonder why?

Matt   May 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Nick,

That is what winning an election is. Math. You get more votes you win. Plain and simple.

Stacey   May 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

I do have to agree that for someone who is so determined to "make every vote count", disregarding all the caucus states is the most bizarre sense of self vetting yourself ever.

Michigan and Florida MUST count because they have the appearance of being "for" Clinton (which is HIGHTLY debateable). But oh nono, caucus states don't count.

Welcome to Hillary-land, where only votes for her count.

william   May 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

If she believes this, she is frankly delusional.

If she [her campaign] is saying this without believing it, she is frankly disengenuous.

As Mark Twain might have said, she doesn't seem to know the difference between a horse and a horse chestnut.

Sola   May 14th, 2008 6:53 pm ET

Did Terry McAuliffe take Math in high school?

Belle   May 14th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

Against Lies….if you REALLY are against lies YOU would know there are 4 States in the PRIMARIES that do NOT count the Popular vote….only the delegate vote. They are: Iowa, Nevada, Maine and WASHINGTON.

Mike   May 14th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

By Hillary Clinton not dropping out of this race it shows just how selfish she is.

Obama Mama   May 14th, 2008 6:52 pm ET

HILLARY THUMPED OBAMA LAST NIGHT!!!!!

PEOPLE WANT HER TO BE PRESIDENT!!!!

GO HILLARY!!!!!!! KEEP SHOWING HIM THAT HE CAN'T WIN IN NOVEMBER!!!!!!!!

Rapid   May 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

New math…John Edwards.

Marilyn, Kansas   May 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

These people have got some nerve. How much more selfish can they be to continue dividing the party for a lost cause? Hilary Clinton needs twice as many delegates as Barack Obama to clinch this. She needs over 70% of the remaining states/superdelgates. It is virtually impossible for her to achieve this. Even in WV where she won 66% she still did not hit 70%. It is hopeless and this is a shame on her and her campaign's behalf.

jo.c Texas   May 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Hillary Clinton will be the best Presidential candidate when it is all said and done. She has made history against all odds, she can deliver without daily endorsement from those who obviously do not count with the voters, otherwise, they would still be in.

TJ in Texas (Dallas)   May 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

They call her pick-and-choose Clinton.

OBAMA 2008

Yes, we can.
Yes, we will.
Yes, we have!

Stop Lying, Hillary!   May 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

How hypocritical. So she thinks Michigan and Florida's voters are being disregarded? How about voters in Caucus states? How about the hundreds of thousands of Michigan Obama supporters who didn't vote in the Primary, or voted for "Unaffiliated"? Should they be forgotten instead.

This is over. Bring on McCain.

Obama '08

Doc, Montello, Nevada   May 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

BIFF, BIFFINGTON...   May 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

DID HE ACTUALLY SAY THAT WITH A STRAIGHT FACE??

Eugene, Oregon   May 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Well in terms of votes cast by real people, the fifth scenario, i.e. all primaries is the only meaningful measure of popular vote. Caucuses do not count. Clinton's lead in the popular vote clearly shows that Obama is the sweetheart of the media and the Democratic establishment but not the American people. Beware November, with Obama at the Democratic helm, we will likely be doomed to another 8 years of Republican rule. The media will hold primary responsibility. Hope they can live with it.

sacto joe   May 14th, 2008 6:51 pm ET

Oh yeh, and don't forget all the electoral votes she has. And wasn't she just endorsed by Elvis?

Dr. J   May 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

I think Hillary needs to take a serious look at stepping down. John Edawrds is now in Michigan endosring Barack Obama. All of his delegates are going to Obama. She is not leading in the popular votes. She is running out of money. Do the party a favor and leave on a high note.

Dee Okla.   May 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Do we want a president that can’t count, doesn’t know when we to quit, and will change the rules when things aren’t going way?

Proud West Virginian   May 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

So Edwards comes out for Obama after CLINTON SMASHES Obama in West Virginia…what timing….I guess Obama needed something to pick him back up.

Who cares if Edwards backs Obama….I personally do not believe that anyone's endorsement (OTHER THAN GOD) has much of an influence on the voters. The simple fact remains that if Obama does win the nomination…HE WILL DEFINITELY LOSE IN THE GENERAL ELECTION….HE SIMPLY CANNOT AND WILL NOT WIN WITHOUT HILLARY. Read it and weep.

hispanic and asian american votes

Fred Atlanta, GA   May 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

To NICK in Vegas if the MATH didn't matter then we wouldn't have PLEDGED delegates to begin with. So the MATH does MATTER you and the rest of hillary supporters need to realize that.

Dan, TX   May 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Count all the votes. The votes in MI that were for OBAMA. Count those votes. The uncommitted votes were mostly for Obama and some for Edwards. Count those votes too.

Emiel   May 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Just as I am listening live to John Edwards telling what a great candidate HRC is, this fool McAuliffe keeps on trying to prove the opposite.

Lisa   May 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Popular Vote should override everything since the DNC cannot conduct business correctly. We must include the votes in Florida.

Don't change the Rules   May 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

I think the 2000 election court ruling in favor of Bush should have made it clear to Dems that American election is won by higher delegates and not popular votes

rw   May 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

Wow. Keep fighting the boys club.
Why would Edwards wait until now…
He must want VP and was worried that Hillary might get it.

Can you say McCain/Powell?
Good luck Democrats, you blew it.

If Edwards can't carry white people for himself, why in the world would you think he could do it for Obama.

Well, men women are 55% of registered voters, and for all you women who have not be railroaded by a guy who wasn't more qualified than you yet, well there are at least 2-3 women voters that have.

Obama will not win these women, no respect.
Sorry.

linda from South Dakota   May 14th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

well, hillary ?? when was the last time you looked at the popular votes? because,, you are behind and its time to hang it all up,,, you and bill can think up some other tatics or "lies" BUt you have lost hillary,, face the facts,, kiddo,, stop with the"wahhh wahhh wahhh" bacuse americans are now smart enuff to know that you would not and neva would be good enuff for president,,, bil and you need to realize lies dont always work ,, (hahahaha),,, grow up,,

Hillary have some dignity.

One America!

Don in Florida   May 14th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

To Nick in Las Vegas; Then why go through all this primary mess why don't we just let the superdelagates choose our nominee? Get over it, Obama won fair and square. You guys need to stop trying to change the rules, the metrics and the goal posts in the middle of the contest. Every contest has a winner and a loser. Clinton gave it a valiant try and she came up short. It's time to move on to other pursuits. The Clinton campaign should be ashamed of themselves for messing up what should have been her nomination. They made tactical errors of judgements. It's no one's fault but theirs. If Clinton was my choice i'd say he beat her fair and square and i'd vote for him in the fall. It's time to fall in behind Obama our nominee.

pmn   May 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Twisted Math….

Kwad   May 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Wow-

For anyone insane enough to still be buying into this- you are laughable.

As far as saying its not just a matter of racking up delegates…. Thats exactly what needs to happen in the general election.

she will run the country like she ran her campaign- Deceit, Debt and other words that start with D- delusional comes to mind.

ltd1974   May 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

To :Nick in Las Vegas– do you understand the process? The Clintons played a huge role in this agreement. The fact is that the Clintons didn't prepare or do there homework, like the Obama camp. Obama camp played by the rules, now all of a sudden the Clintons want to break the rules to count votes. The super's D are not playing that game. I understand your a Hillary supporters, but common sense is in writing on how this election will proceed. Please! Please! Please! read.

mike   May 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

spin till you fall over

Marilyn, Kansas   May 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Hilary CLinton only wants all voices heard if they are shouting Hilary. There is no scenario that her camp will support that is fair. And even by all reasonable estimates (including all primaries & caucuses and not giving Barack Obama any of Michigan's votes which is ridiculous) SHE STILL LOSES!

A fomer Hillary supporter   May 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

If she's truly basing this on the fifth scenario then her math is a complete joke! So it's OK to include Florida and Michigan who defied the party rules but not caucus states that voted within the rules set by the party. I used to really admire her but now she's become breathakingly pathetic.

JR   May 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Ummm, Mr. McAuliffe, you are on crack. Sorry dude. This argument is so flawed you should be ashamed to put it forward.

Timothy   May 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Nick, you obviously don't live in America. How can you say that. The number of voters who count are for him. The ones who don't count, well they don't count. Look at a map and see who has won the most primaries, Obama. Who has one more states, Obama. Who has less CLINTON. I know you trust the name but I smell more lies and deception, her campaign reeks of it.

fred   May 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Count FL and MI

We will NOT unite behind Obama!!!

Walt   May 14th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Nick, if you do not believe in any numerical standard for becoming the nominee, then what on earth do you suggest? He leads in pledge delegates. He leads in super delegates. He leads in popular vote, and he has won the most states. I meand wow, what else does he have to do to appease you?

Or is it that you have set the standard higher for him for reasons having nothing to do with his opponent or the primaries…

Marilyn, Kansas   May 14th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

OMG!! Why is she doing this? Even those who think she is a strong candidate know that this race is over. She looks like a desperate teenager hoping she still might get asked to prom. I really wish the DNC would say that there is a nominee and ask her to step down. It is time for the party to come together and support the candidate who ran the better race and is more likely to win in November.

I think this amounts to a bold faced lie. She only leads if you DONT count about 7 states that went for Obama and count two states that dont count at all.

If Clinton ever wondered why people dont trust her and her negatives are so high, and why uneducated people support her this is another reason why.

28 cents savings per day is NOT a gas tax holiday.

She does NOT lead in the popular vote.

Just read the posts about Clinton being proud of her daughter and choking up about her. Have you ever read such nasty remarks in your life. These people aren't democrats, these people are nasty hate filled women haters. Millions of Americans have voted for Clinton, and millions won't vote for Obama, good luck in the general, Obama supporters are losing the Democratic base with all their hate, and I for one am going do my best to show people just how mean spirited the campaign of hope and change is.

senj   May 14th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Very preposterous. Terry just proved to everybody that he is the achitect of Clinton's misfortune, and in order to continue putting HRC into more debt, while he's own bank account is growing, he needs to come up with absurd claims. This is one of the biggest jokes ever. Nice job Terry, you can go home now.
