State Senate OKs doctor gift ban

First-in-the-nation law targets drug companies

The state Senate unanimously approved a first-in-the-nation law banning all gifts to doctors from pharmaceutical companies, but lawmakers removed a controversial provision that would have criminalized the practice.

The gift ban was approved as part of a sweeping package of reforms seeking to control skyrocketing health-care costs. Other provisions of the bill would force the adoption of computerized medical records and require health insurers to publicly document annual cost increases.
