School machete rampage: 101 charges

Five youths facing 20 charges each over the invasion of Merrylands High School yesterday will remain in custody after the matter was heard in court today.

They did not apply for bail and their presence was not required in court.

They will appear in Parramatta Children's Court on May 22.

Four face 20 charges and one faces 21 charges over yesterday's attack in which students were injured during a rampage through the school.

The charges include assault, malicious damage and affray.

Emergency crews were called to the school in Merrylands West about 8.45am yesterday following a report that five youths armed with baseball bats, a sword and a machete had entered the school.

During the terrifying rampage several people were threatened and 18 students and one teacher were injured, police said.

The 43-year-old male teacher received head injuries.

Two 14-year-old boys from Carramar and Auburn, two 15-year-old boys from Merrylands and Seven Hills and a 16-year-old boy from Merrylands were arrested at the scene.

Exact charges

Each of the boys faces these charges:

■ One count of destroying or damaging property worth more than $15,000.

■ One count of affray.

■ One count of assaulting a school staff member occasioning actual bodily harm.

■ Two counts of assaulting a school staff member while attending school.

■ Seven counts of assaulting school students occasioning actual bodily harm.

■ Seven counts of assaulting school students while attending school.

■ One count of participating in a criminal group.

One of the boys faces an extra charge of breaking his bail conditions.
