The Church Gathers
WELCOME, ANNOUNCEMENTS,
& PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

PRELUDE        Kathryn Ammel Parker

*CALL TO WORSHIP       adapted from Psalm 111
Praise the Lord!
In the company of God’s congregation
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart!

Great are the works of the Lord,
studied by all who delight in them.
Full of honor and majesty are God’s work
and the Lord’s righteousness endures forever.

The works of God’s hands are faithful and just;
all God’s commands are trustworthy, they are established forever,
and are to be practiced by the faithful and upright.

The Lord has redeemed the people
and has commanded the covenant forever.
Holy and awesome is God’s name!

*SONG OF PRAISE           No. 127, UMH
Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

MORNING PRAYER (unison)
Almighty God, across the ages you have been ever faithful
to the covenant promises made to your people.
You have provided nourishment, deliverance,
and guidance time and time again.
You have spoken through prophet, scripture,
and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
Your love is so complete that you have given your very life
that we may receive forgiveness
and share in your covenant forever.

Grant us this day, faith and strength to be your covenant partners
and live each day in honor and praise of you
and in service to our sisters and brothers.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

The Sharing of God’s Holy Word

FIRST READING          Deuteronomy 18:9-13
When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you,
you must not learn to imitate the abhorrent practices of those nations.
10No one shall be found among you who makes a son or daughter
pass through fire, or who practices divination, or is a soothsayer,
or an augur, or a sorcerer, 11or one who casts spells,
or who consults ghosts or spirits, or who seeks oracles from the dead. 1
2For whoever does these things is abhorrent to the Lord;
it is because of such abhorrent practices
that the Lord your God is driving them out before you.
13You must remain completely loyal to the Lord your God.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

*HYMN OF RESPONSE No. 467, UMH
Trust and Obey

YOUNG DISCIPLE’S TIME      Dawn Hill-Fleury
All the children are invited to come to the Chancel for a time of discipling!
Following this time, Sunday School (grades 3-8)
and the nursery are available.

SECOND READING             Mark 1:21-28
They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came,
he entered the synagogue and taught.
22They were astounded at his teaching,
for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.
23Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit,
24and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.”
25But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”
26And the unclean spirit,
convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.
27They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another,
“What is this? A new teaching - with authority!
He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”
28At once his fame began to spread
throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to Christ!
