A friend of mine tht raises bees gave me a large piece of beeswax adn I am using for strings. However it is very hard wax and it doesn't work all that well. How can I soften it some so that it transfers to the string material easier?

I have heard you can mix it with pine sap but in what proportions?

The other thing you can do is go to the hardware store and buy a non-flanged bees wax toliet seat ring melt them down together it will soften up the natural bees wax. Just be sure you filter all the crud out if there is any in the natural bees wax your buddy gave you. For a mold after they are melted and mixed I use the aluminum cover for for free standing (don't need a cup cake pan) cup cake wrappers (don't use the paper liners). When it cools I just peel the alumuinum off. DANNY

I think when I used pine sap it was something like 4:1, wax to sap. The sap was a bit of a pain to melt down and strain to get bark and whatnot out, but it makes a really nice string making wax. Sticky, but not too sticky! And it softens the wax up. Smells good too! LOL.....

I use the bees wax in it's hard form. I rub it on the string to get the string covered and then I take a small piece of deer hide and rub it up and down the string very quickly. The friction will melt the bees wax and it will penetrate into the string. It does a nice job this way.

Don't know how the pine sap softens the wax but it does. Not goo soft, but soft enough to not flake off when waxing a string. And pine sap in and of itself is sticky stuff. I got the "receipe" from a friend and made some up a few years ago and it really works nice. I still rub my strings down with a piece of leather to melt it in.

I shave it off into one of the plastic cups from a Nyguil bottle. Then set it in a pan of water on the stove to melt. I mix in a little cooking oil to soften it. David

You guys sure go to a lot of trouble to make string wax. One pound of bees wax, one wax toilet ring seal melted together and you have a lifetime supply of wonderful string wax for yourself and all your friends, at the perfect consistency.

I also use the toilet bowl wax ring. I have a summer time mix and a winter time mix. I use two rings for my winter mix to a pound and one ring for my summer time mix. Steve

50% bear grease (rendered bear fat) and 50% beeswax mixture works great for a bow string... as well as a patch lube for a lead ball, a treatment for your mocassins (or other modern footwear), leather conditioner, skin cream, lip balm... whatever! :)

Pure bees wax needs no softening, it perfect like it is. Your storing it in too cold a place. Put on a window sill in the sun for a little while and it will be fine. Bob

3 parts bees wax and 1 part toilet bowl wax ring. Melt them together in an aluminum pie plate over a pan of boiling water. Pour into minature cupcake pan liners and let cool.
