Defence Logistics 2008

6-7 August 2008 – Radisson Plaza Hotel, Sydney

With an expanding defence force operating in numerous conflict zones, stretching from the Middle East to the South Pacific, efficient defence logistics have never been more critical to the success of the Australian Defence Force.

The new Federal Government has pledged over $50 billion in new equipment over the next 10 years to modernise air, sea and land forces as engagements in Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor, amongst others, look set to continue. The strategic demands of modern warfare place huge demands on logistics. The need for a system that can support, maintain and sustain equipment and personnel has always been a determining factor in the success of armed forces. With Australian Defence Forces stationed in distant locations, this is as true today as it has ever been.

Australasian Freight Logistics and MHD Supply Chain Solutions, two of the leading transport and logistics magazines, will convene a unique panel of expert speakers. Drawing on the knowledge of Australian and International defence logistics practitioners, from the armed forces, defence industry, logistics operators and independent analysts, the conference will not only provide an update on the current state of play, with in-depth analysis of future requirements, but will offer a distinct opportunity for those involved in the sector to network with peers who have a specific interest in defence logistics.

From procurement, managing and tracking assets to the role of the military in aid missions, this is an opportunity to debate challenges, learn from case studies, examine new and emerging technologies and benchmark progress.

What to expect at Defence Logistics 2008

Drawing on the knowledge of Australian and International defence logistics practitioners, the two day conference will bring together Government, defence forces and industry to examine the efficiency of logistics and supply chains in both non-combat and field operations.

Day One will provide a strategic overview of current logistics capability and assess future operational needs while reviewing defence and industry partnerships. In this highly competitive field, innovation is a key factor to success and the opening day will showcase a series of new and emerging technologies from BAE Systems Australia, Boeing, GS1 Australia, Mincom, Savi Technology and Thales.

The importance of humanitarian logistics, especially during natural disasters, has been in sharp focus over recent weeks. Day Two will explore the logistics of non-combat military requirements featuring key contributions from:

  • Major General Grant Cavenagh AM, Commander, Joint Logistics, Australian Defence Force
  • Major General Rhys Jones, Commander, Joint Forces New Zealand (COM JFNZ)
  • Colonel Eric Lorraine, Chief Office of Defense, Cooperation, US Embassy, Canberra
  • Amer Daoudi, Director of Transport and Procurement, UN World Food Programme
