WKU to hire new receivers coach/offensive coordinator

24 02 2011

A source with knowledge of the situation told the Daily News this morning that Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart has hired former Florida wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni to his staff for next season.

Azzanni fills the void left by former quarterback coach/passing game coordinator Mike Sanford – who departed for Stanford earlier this month.

The role that Azzanni will serve has yet to officially be determined, according to the source. Azzanni will likely operate under the title of offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach – with Taggart himself still doing the overall playcalling.

The hire won’t become official until likely sometime next week due to human resource reasons.

With the swap in responsibilities, the source said that Terry Obee – who served as the team’s receivers coach last season – will move over to coach running backs. As for the quarterbacks coach position, the source says Taggart will handle those responsibilities himself.

Last season, Taggart served as his own running backs coach.

Prior to serving as wide receivers coach under Urban Meyer last season at Florida, Azzanni spent two seasons as the assistant head coach/wide receivers coach at Central Michigan. He’s also had assistant coaching jobs at Bowling Green State and Valparasio.
