There are a number of products used on farm and I don’t think any divide opinion quite like silage additives. It is estimated that only 20% of farmers actually use an additive yet the benefits are well documented and scientifically proven.

The saying quoted by many a salesperson is that an additive is an insurance policy. I personally couldn’t disagree more.

A silage additive will make good silage, great, but it isn’t capable of turning poor silage into good silage. The most important thing about using a silage additive is that you make good silage. That means you need to consider grass maturity, cutting height, wilting time, self propelled forager or forage wagon, one or two tractors on the clamp, side sheets or cling film. Using an additive certainly doesn’t mean you can forget about watching the weather forecast.

Just because you have an insurance policy for your car, doesn’t mean you drive recklessly and the same mindset should be used with making silage and using additives. To get the best out of any additive you need to make good silage. The better you can make silage, the better the additive will work. If you get unlucky with the weather or a breakdown and things start to go wrong, a silage additive will help prevent a disaster, but additives will never make good silage from bad.
