So my only protection is a kindergarten teacher and a ninety-eight-pound female minister....And they don't even believe I'm in danger.

As Bethany approaches her thirteenth birthday, her parents act more oddly than usual. Her mother cries constantly, and her father barely lets Bethany out of his sight. Then one morning he hustles the entire family into the car, drives across several state lines -- and leaves Bethany with an aunt she never knew existed. Bethany has no idea what's going on. She's worried her mom and dad are running from some kind of trouble, but she can't find out because they won't tell her where they are going.

Bethany's only clue is a few words she overheard her father tell her aunt: "She doesn't know anything about Elizabeth." But Aunt Myrlie won't tell Bethany who Elizabeth is, and she won't explain why people in her small town react to Bethany as if they've seen a ghost. The mystery intensifies when Bethany gets a package from her father containing four different birth certificates from four different states, with four different last names -- and thousands of dollars in cash. And when a strange man shows up asking questions, Bethany realizes the's not the only one who's desperate to unravel the secrets of her past.

I grew up on a farm outside Washington Court House, Ohio. As a kid, I liked to read a lot, and was also involved in 4-H, various bands and choirs (I played flute and piano), church youth group, the school newspaper, and a quiz-bowl type team. I was pretty disastrous as an athlete, although I did run track one year in high school. After graduating from Miami University (of Ohio), I worked as a newspaper copy editor in Fort Wayne, Indiana; a newspaper reporter in Indianapolis; and a part-time community college instructor and freelance writer in Danville, Illinois, before my first book was published. I've moved around a lot as an adult, having also lived in Luxembourg (during a college semester abroad) and in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. Several years ago, I moved back to Ohio with my husband and kids; we now live in Columbus, Ohio. My husband trains investigative journalists, and my kids are in high school, so there's always a lot going on around our house.

I am a fast reader when I want to be. And I have to say this book is one that I read in a day. It is so good I couldn't put it down. It's adventurous and mysterious. It really gets the wheels going in your mind. I literally gasped out loud on some parts. I'm thirteen and absolutely love this book. You should definitely get this book. I was skeptical at first but I had to read it for a summer project for school and it turned out to be super good. Give it a try, you won't regret it!!!!!! ;)

I read this book before, about a year ago, and me and my sister were talking about it, so I decided to read it again. So I bought it on here (the first time it was from the library.) And I loved it! I'm glad I forgot most of the plot, because it being a mystery, I wouldn't like to know everything that happens.

So it's about a 12-almost-13-year old girl name Bethany who lives in Pennsylvania. Then out of nowhere her mom starts crying all the time, and then they drive to Illinois and drop Bethany off at an aunt's house, who she didn't even know existed!!

Then all this weird stuff starts happening and people look shocked and say she looks exactly like Elizabeth. She has no idea who Elizabeth is, or what happened to her. What follows is how she finds out who she is and uncovers the secrets of the past. You totally have to read it to find out the rest!!!

I would recommend this to ages 10-15 because I'm 13 and I really liked it, and all of my friends are in the age range of 12-15 and all of them would love it (except for a couple who are guys and obviously wouldn't like it lol). Also a few of my friends have sisters who are nine or ten and they would probably like it to.

So this is a great book, and you should really get it!! I got it around 12 pm yesterday, and now it's 9 pm the next day and I'm done. Oh and if you like this book you should check out Wendy Mass's books or Kate messner' s. They are really good.

I hope this helped you in any way :)

My son and I are reading this book together as a part of his 8th grade Family Read In event. I just wanted us to read a book together and so I didn't really care what we read. But I am so glad it was "Double Identity". The book is a quick, entertaining read and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I love the Young Adult genre and this may have been written just a tad younger than what I usually enjoy but I found it to be compelling and intriguing. We know right away that there is a huge secret in Bethany's family. Her parents are older than her friend's parents. They are driving away from home, leaving behind everything, in a parade of tears. She is dropped off to live with an "Aunt" she has never known existed. Her phone, her mom's and her dad's phones are all inactivated.

As Bethany gets to know Myrlie, she also becomes acquainted with the town where her parent's once lived. Everywhere she goes, people stop and stare. "But she looks so much like...", "Its like seeing a ghost". Who does Bethany look like? What happened to her? What secret are her parent's hiding? Bethany's love for her parents doesn't waver despite all the questions and uncertainties in her head. Her desperate attempts at contact with her mom and dad are sad and almost painful to see unfold. I had plenty of guess about what the secret is. You THINK you know the secret but later on an even bigger one is revealed. This truly is a well written mystery.

The only complaint I have is the story with the villain. The wrap up involving this third party was too out of the blue and all the pieces were tied far too neatly to be believable. To think that the secret was what it was, and that there would be no consequences from that...no fallout...was ridiculous. I know the book is for younger readers but even they are smart enough to know that the ending is too simplistic. Still a fantastic and fun quick read. I do recommend it.

Double Identity is a book about a girl named Bethany who is really spoiled; she is a tolerant only child. When she's about to turn 13 years old her parents start acting really strange. One day, they start a long car ride that lasts more than half a day. They arrive to a little, old, new town where Bethany is left with her aunt who she is about to meet. Her mother leaves her with lots of tears running through her face.

Bethany is left in that house with no concentration or explanation. The only word she has heard lately and that won't come out of her head is "Elizabeth". She is very confused, and doesn't understand why people react so impressed when they see her.

Nothing makes sense to her until the day someone delivers a packet to her with many birth certificates with different last names and from different states. And when a suspicious man comes to her to ask her some questions, she realizes she's not the only one who doesn't know the answers.

I really liked this book because it is the type of book that you don't want to stop reading until you discover the mysteries. I recommend this book to people who like mystery and realistic fiction. At first i didn't want to read it, but once I started it, I got engaged to it and couldn't stop!

They couldn’t put this book down. It is a real page-turner.
Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2013
My 10 year old son read this aloud to my 7 year old daughter and me as part of his summer reading requirement. The story is well told and taught with mystery/suspense. We loved Bethany's character and the many strange questions she is forced to answer. Her constant interior dialogue cataloguing her thoughts, fears and general insecurities was a bit much for me, but the children liked it. They said they felt like they were really inside Bethany's head. And it taught them some new vocabulary. They give the book five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Tense Page Turner!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 27, 2013
I gave this book 5 stars because it is a complete page turner that left me hanging at the end of each chapter. Bethany is the main character of this story. As the story moves on Bethany is gathering clues about her family's past. One particular phone call gives her the main answer to all her questions!

The title of the story is very compelling. The chapters look very appealing and make you want to read on. For me it was very hard to put the book down as everytime I turned the page I wanted to carry on reading! This is one of my favourite books ever! Not only how the story is built up but also because I have some things in common with Bethany.

I would recommend this book for people aged 10 and over. As some of the vocabulary may be a bit hard to understand for younger people!

I hope my review was very helpful and you enjoy the book!
