Description[edit]

Katrina is known as a heavily Protoss-favored map. In particular it was labeled imbalanced for Carrier abuse, which is common due to the map’s many ridges. Because of the Carrier’s effectiveness on Katrina, 2 Base Carrier was extremely popular on this map. It wasn’t until Flash unveiled his anti-Carrier build at the GOMTV Star Invitational that Protoss players began diversifying their PvT play on Katrina.

Notable Features[edit]

  • Ridge Architecture — Much of the map is cliffed. This makes Carrier harass very effective, but Gateway-based PvT very difficult.
  • Protected Natural — Katrina’s Natural is located behind its Main, allowing for easier Fast Expanding.

Build Orders[edit]

2 Base Carrier

The map's many cliffs, ramps and high grounds enable Protoss to pressure Terran with Carriers. As a consequence, professional players often tried to build a massive air force early in the game. Additionally, the relatively long distances between Natural Expansions and Spawning Locations supported harassment via air.

12 Nexus

The aforementioned long distances between Natural Expansions and Spawning Locations enabled Protoss to open with a Nexus first expansion. Opening with a macro oriented build could be supported, since the opponent would automatically have to play with rather hampering map features working againts him. More modern reactions by Terrans decreased the value of the opening, however.
