The Beatles' Bog Roll Up For Bids

added 04 January 2005 at 11.58

A roll of toilet paper from legendary Beatles studio Abbey Road from around the time the Fab Four would have been using the facilities conveniences has surfaced on eBay with an auction price of £40,000.

The roll of toilet paper has been kept sealed in the glass box shown since the day it was bought at the ‘The Sale Of The Century’ auction, held  at the studios back in October 1980.

Now the roll (described as “refused by The Beatles”) has surfaced once more, this time on eBay, with a reserve price of £40,000.

"Most things went very smoothly with The Beatles at Abbey Road - but not this roll of
toilet paper which they complained was too hard and shiny,” explained former Abbey Road General Manager Ken Townsend.

“They also thought it disgraceful that the management should stamp each sheet of paper EMI Ltd. The paper was immediately withdrawn and things became much smoother for staff after that."

The roll, on which each individual sheet is indeed printed with ‘EMI Ltd’, comes with the original certificate of authenticity issued by Townsend, and is specifically mentioned in the book of the official history of the studios, (also generously included in the price).
