Unrequited (working title NYY [non-yuri yuri]) (Yuri Collections segment completed into a full video)

Warning: if you are bothered by AMV’s that deviate stories from their original sources or by an unreturned love between women, maybe this video isn’t for you.

First off, I want to blame / thank Rina Rina for ‘forcing’ me to make this video by not accepting my ‘no’ to her demand that I create a yuri segment for the Yuri Collections project and by accepting my strict demands that if I were to do a piece, I needed it to be done on my terms (song couldn’t be cut, no letterboxing, blah blah blah etc). Without you, this Jack Johnson song would have remained a yuri-free song for me…

Sitting Waiting Wishing by Jack Johnson
When approached to do this project, I really had no ideas of where and how to start. I had recently been to the Kokua Fest here in Hawaii, a concert held here annually by Jack Johnson and his friends on Earth Day so I had been listening to his ‘In Between Dreams’ album and I heard this song. Listening closely to the lyrics, I thought that I could make something yuri with it so I begrudgingly ripped the track and began to listen and re-listen to it.

Sidenote - Alright, I swore up and down that after my previous Eva vid Threshold, I’d delete the series off my hard drive. Well, I didn’t – so there.

As this piece was geared to be for a yuri collection, I thought why not use my two favorite female characters for the leads: Misato Katsuragi and Priss Asagiri. There wasn’t much else in the choice in the video selection as both had very sufficient footage of the two women and each had suitable backgrounds and surroundings that could be ‘easily’ masked into one-another.

    Basic Ideas and Themes
With the two main characters chosen, I had to make sure I cast them into their proper roles. Priss, the rockstar, had to be the object of desire; with Misato, being the ‘softer’ of the two, was cast as the obsessed fan that blurs the line between fan and fanatic whose ‘love’ for her idol blinds reason and logic of the situation at hand and has to resort to drastic measures for her to be noticed.

    Techniques
I tried to keep Priss’ role in the beginning of the video at a minimum so she only appears in passing (the magazine covers, the pictures on the wall, the ‘cheesy’ star outline [which I have to thank Jubbers for the idea], and the concert poster) to help build up the drama. Right at the halfway point, Misato’s image of her object of desire crashes around her obsessive nature and she breaks down, and things take a turn for the worst. As the story progresses, Priss takes more dominance in the video as she is forced to confront Misato’s desperate act for attention.

    Visual Effects
With very few exceptions, almost every second of this video has some sort of video manipulation done to it: be it masking / alpha channels, image manipulations, frame by frame image additions, or just plain construction of entire scenes. Most prevalent are the masking effects which a good chuck of the video relies on to mesh the two different animes together. All masking effects were done by exporting frame by frame images and manually masking out the foreground / background – actually, all my effects were done that way… I don’t even want to count them all.

    Technical
This video was created on 3 machines and a portable HD
Home computer – Athlon dual core X2 4200, 2 gigs ram
Work computer - Pentium 4, 3.4ghz HT, 1 gig ram
Laptop computer – Athlon turion T-40, 1.25 gigs ram
Portable HD - 200 gig USB hard drive

Video editor: Magix Movie Edit Pro 10
    Encoder:
AVI XVID [1st pass] - VirtualDubMod
    MP4 [Q=30] - Zarx264gui
note: to view the MP4 file, you will either need the CCCP codec pack installed onto your computer or use VLC Player

Time: too much to even count. In total, I believe it took me around 8 months of work.

    Closing Thoughts
This is the first video that I’ve created for a MEP that I really wanted to extend to a full and complete piece on its own. I really enjoyed working on it (despite all my bitching and moaning about it to all of my AMV-making friends. It was a big burden for me to carry all that time, and I really kept a lot of the entire progress secret for most of it, but I think that in the end, I came out with a great piece!

If you enjoy it, QC’s and/or Opinions are much appreciated.

added 070517 - the making of...
due to some requests, I've created a 'making of' video showing the original source materials used and commentary on how they were modified / used in the piece. My good friend Katie / JaddziaDax has graciously hosted it for me on her website - see below for link.
    Enjoy!
