The Bernard Series Whole Bunch Roussanne 2009

Had a surfeit of Sauvignon Blanc and can't cope with any more Chardonnay? The Whole Bunch Roussanne is the first of three whites here demonstrating the delights of less well-known grapes, a South African wine made using a French variety normally found in Rhône blends. A big, rich mouthful, with plenty of pear and honey flavours, balanced by a nice astringency. Great food wine and spot on with anything fishy and garlicky. £9.99, Sainsbury's

Côtes de Saint-Mont, Les Vignes Retrouvées 2008

The Gers area of Gascony is home to the Plaimont wine co-operative that positively celebrates the often obscure grape varieties of the area. Here, Arrufiac, Petit Courbu and Gros Manseng combine to produce an unusual, aromatic, complex white, with a mixture of apple and grapefruit flavours. Good to slice through goat's cheese or as a match for smoked fish. £7.50, thewinesociety.com

Bargain basement

Cuvée de Richard 2010 PGI du Comté Tolosan

The simple label says this is a dry, clean and crisp white from the south-west of France (actually near Toulouse) and that it has fresh citrus lemon aromas. Impossible to argue with that, apart from adding that it is made from a blend of Colombard and Ugni Blanc, together with a little Sauvignon, and that at this price it is a great buy, which is pretty much perfect as an aperitif or for spring party glugging. £4.79, Majestic stores
