GE was doing a lot of government work back then (1985) especially on the OTH-B radar system designed by GE....

Yes John, those were fun times, the Soviets already had OTH radar (Duga 3), and the Woodpecker Hunting Club was in its prime.

I did a lot of civil engineering work at both Maine sites when they were being built (my first real job). I do remember technicians there talk about listening to the "woodpeckers" LOL...... I do admit that the Reagan era was pretty good for me until it petered out. For some damn reason the term "Voodoo Economics" keeps popping up as I write this....

More than "listening" was going on...

Actually, Ronnie was a corporate assest since the early 1950s(even if he didn'r know it). He was the host of General Electric theater in 1953. Remeber, "We bring good things to life"? That's if you exclude building nuclear reactors on the cheap and setting the world aglow.

It cannot cause earthquakes........ U-Maine students used it for a while for atmospheric research after it had been shut down. and no, it cannot change weather either. They did have to shut down sector 1 transmit site on occasion when moose would walk out in front of it (so they could chase it off). The site transmitted a microwave signal and like an AM radio station, has a copper grounding grid laid out on the surface of the ground in front of the transmit tower array (3/4 mile long, which purpose was to "raise the beam upwards' so that it could bounce off of the ionosphere and see over the curvature of the earth. If a moose stood on the grid it would not harm the animal but cause a problem with the beam. The operator would see a very large shadow blocking the radar return. After sectors 2 and 3 transmit sites were built the area was completely fenced off. The receive sites were 3 antenna arrays being 1 mile long each. All they did was recieve the signals that 'bounced' back and relayed the data to the control room in Bangor.

I am talking about the Woodpecker Hunting Club John, I know what Duga 3 was, I stated it above. The hunting club was doing more than listening.

The hunting club had a goal John, to interfere with Duga 3.

Okie dokey Gomp, sorry I mis-understood (guessed wrongly) about what you were saying... Yep, that was probably going on.....

Just think whats going on that we dont know anything about.....? Were getting better at it, but im sure the goverment is still 3 steps ahead of us.

Thanks to the internet, we now can find out stuff that was still in the dark back in 1990.....You bet the goverment knows were comming after them.

A few days ago I took a peek at Al Gores' website.... Some of you know I am originally from Maine so you might expect I know a little bit about 'Beaver Fever"..... He claims that an increase of this condition is linked to global warming because the 'beavers' are moving north but fails to say that this can be caused by other 'wildlife'.... I also noticed a while later he changed the headline to omit 'beaver fever'......

Regarding my 4:57 post about Al Gore and Beaver fever....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaver

Water Quality and Beaver

Beaver ponds, and the wetlands that succeed them, remove sediments and pollutants from waterways, including total suspended solids, total nitrogen, phosphates, carbon and silicates.[17][18]

The term ‘beaver fever’ is a misnomer coined by the American press in the 1970s, following findings that the parasite Giardia lamblia, which causes Giardiasis, is carried by beavers. However, further research has shown that many animals and birds carry this parasite, and the major source of water contamination is by other humans.[19][20][21] Norway has many beaver but has not historically had giardia and New Zealand has giardia but no beaver. Recent concerns point to domestic animals as a significant vector of giardia with young calves in dairy herds testing as high as 100% positive for giardia.[22] In addition, fecal coliform and streptococci bacteria excreted into streams by grazing cattle have been shown to be reduced by beaver ponds, where the bacteria are trapped in bottom sediments.[23]

Habitat

The habitat of the beaver is the riparian zone, inclusive of stream bed. The actions of beavers for hundreds of thousands of years[not specific enough to verify] in the Northern Hemisphere have kept these watery systems healthy and in good repair, although a human observing all the downed trees might think that the beavers were doing just the opposite.

Note: Beavers are non-migratory animals and winter where they put so much effort building their home.

50 to 60 Years ago when we camped in the high country of Colorado, as long as you weren't downstream from a mine or a primitive septic from somebody's cabin, you could drink from any stream or spring running clear and cold you came across.

Guiding fishermen and big game hunters in the same areas a few years ago, one of the first instructions we gave them, don't drink the water no mater how clean it appears to be. We had several people who ignored our warnings and got very sick. One ended up in the hospital and damn near died.

Had it once myself, and no matter how thirsty I am these days, the stream water gets boiled, or I don't drink it

I believe the major Giardia contamination was caused by grazing sheep and cattle high in the headwaters of the streams and rivers during the summer. The beavers are innocent.
