Palin’s fan base

More rough polling numbers for Sarah Palin: In a CBS News poll, a majority of Republicans said they don’t want her to run for president in 2012.

Fifty-four percent of Republicans said they don’t want Palin to run, compared with just 34 percent who said they’re hoping for a bid. Among self-identified tea party supporters, Palin fared only slightly better: 38 percent want her in the race, while 50 percent don’t.

And in a sample of all registered voters, Palin’s appeal is exceedingly narrow: Twenty-five percent want her in the race and 66 percent don’t.

None of that means Palin wouldn’t be a force in a GOP presidential primary, and Reuters released a poll yesterday showing her effectively tied for first with Mitt Romney. But there’s a difference between being a factor and having a path to victory.
