Review
"This book could not have arrived at a more opportune time. With unsustainable costs coupled with a fragmented delivery framework, health care is in urgent need of reform. Dr. Schimpff, a seasoned health-care executive, capably sheds badly needed light on an all-too-complicated subject."—Eli Y. Adashi, MD, MS, CPE, FACOG, professor of medical science, former dean of medicine and biological sciences, and Frank L. Day Professor of Biology, Brown University
"At last we have a clear way through the morass of health-care delivery and its needed reform. Dr Schimpff’s tour de force should be required reading for every member of Congress and every voter, all of whom need to know what is really at stake with health-care reform. This book tells it all—clearly, urgently, and without political agenda."—Stephen H. Zinner, MD, Charles S. Davidson Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and chair, Department of Medicine, Mount Auburn Hospital, Boston
"Everyone should read this book; it will open your eyes to the reasons why health care costs so much yet is beset with so many interminable problems. Dr. Schimpff is a master at converting the complex into the comprehensible. Whether you agree with all of his recommendations or not, he bases them on real facts."—Robert A. Chrencik, MBA, CPA, president and CEO, University of Maryland Medical System
"The health-care conundrum, representing almost 20 percent of GNP, challenges even the brightest minds. Dr. Schimpff’s insights and unraveling of a very complex industry will in fact help drive change in this country and influence the national platform. A must-read for all health-care executives."—Sarah E. Sinclair, MBA, BSN, RN, FACHE, executive chief nursing officer and chair of the Stanley Shalom Zielony Institute for Nursing Excellence, Cleveland Clinic
"Dr. Schimpff’s refreshing refusal to take sides in the partisan squabble over health-care reform in Washington makes this book invaluable as a guide for those of us who will be making critical decisions in the near future."—Rep. C. A. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-MD)

In his fifth decade as physician, healthcare executive, educator and infectious disease/cancer researcher, Dr. Stephen Schimpff is one of the world's foremost experts on healthcare. He is the former Chief Executive Officer of the University of Maryland Medical Center, which includes the world's preeminent trauma center, an NCI certified comprehensive cancer center, and one of the country's largest kidney transplant programs. The Medical Center admits nearly 40,000 patients per year, mostly for complex tertiary care, and employs more than 5,000 people with a budget of over $1 billion. Quasi-retired, Dr. Schimpff also is an adjunct professor of medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he he practiced medicine, taught and did research for over 30 years and is a former professor of public policy at the University of Maryland, College Park.
From the bedside -- where he treated patients with acute leukemia and lymphoma, to the boardroom -- where he served as the CEO of a major academic medical center, Dr. Schimpff has witnessed firsthand the explosion of diagnostic and treatment technologies, including the emergence of the genomics revolution. He also has dealt with the frustrations of trying to manage a large-healthcare organization in an ever-changing healthcare landscape and watched with anguish the development of the primary care shortage and crisis.

His passion for advancing healthcare, health and wellness for future generations is embodied in his six books on these topics for the general public, including "Fixing The Primary Care Crisis - Reclaiming the Patient-Doctor Relationship and Returning Healthcare Decisions to You and Your Doctor," "Longevity Decoded - The 7 Keys to Healthy Aging" and BOOM - Boost Our Own Metabolism" co-authored with Harry Oken, MD
In addition to his work in educating the public about how to preserve and increase health and wellness along with how changes in the healthcare landscape will affect them, Dr. Schimpff is internationally recognized for his infectious disease/cancer research at the University of Maryland and the National Cancer Institute. His research focused on the causes, prevention, and treatment of infection in cancer patients undergoing aggressive therapy. He has published more than 200 scientific articles on cancer, infectious diseases and healthcare and is board certified in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and medical oncology.
Dr. Schimpff is a senior adviser to Sage Growth Partners and also has been a board member of companies seeking to advance medical devices and technologies and was the lead consultant to the US Army's Telemedicine and Technology Research Center (TATRC) on patient safety and the "OR of the Future." An Eagle Scout, Dr. Schimpff is a 1963 graduate of Rutgers University where he was a Henry Rutgers Scholar. He obtained his M.D. degree in 1967 at Yale Medical School, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha national honor medical society. Recently, he was elected to mastership in the American College of Physicians.
Dr. Schimpff has been married to Carol Rawstrom Schimpff, a retired architect, former docent at the Walters Art Museum and a watercolorist, for over 56 years. They reside in Maryland and have a cabin in Canaan Valley, West Virginia where they live their passion for the outdoors. - Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2015I found this book to be very enjoyable and informative. In looking back over the book as I write this review, I see underlines and highlights (and little orange sticky-notes) all the way through.
Dr Stephen Schimpff is a veteran author and covered the following major topics very well:
1. A Vision for Healthcare Delivery in the 21st Century
2. Megatrends in Medical Care Delivery
3. The Cost of Medical Care in America
4. Healthcare Reform
I believe it was the third topic that I got the most out of. Primarily because unlike other authors who talk about the ACA and the state of our current system in such a way as to FIX THE BLAME on someone or something; rather Dr. Schimpff attempts to define and then FIX THE PROBLEM.
I believe Dr. Schimpff takes a very proactive approach to his recommendations. One of the main ones that I found very enlightening was “In short, we need a major overhaul of the entire system that realigns incentives and balances fundamental rights with corresponding responsibilities.” When you think about it, balance rights and responsibilities is an approach that attacks the root cause of several healthcare delivery problems.
I believe that the author also supports “Integrity in Medicine” by suggesting that all parties come together, including patients, and agree on foundational principles of good patient care. He readily admits that everyone will resist the need to change (and be concerned with defending their turf), but if we can all agree that it’s important to do the right thing, then our solution will be the most effective, and least costly, for all of us.
I believe this book, and especially the recommendations made within, could be a major step forward to a better healthcare delivery system. Although it is three years old as I write this, it is needed now more than ever. Therefore I highly recommend it to all, those within and without the healthcare system.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2012The Future of Health-Care Delivery is a brilliant synthesis of perhaps America's greatest fumble. Dr. Schimpff dissects the US health-care system with a razor sharp scalpel and offers incredible reason to a puzzle that has eluded this country for decades. Every business owner, politician, physician, hospital, health insurance company, and patient should read this book. Patients would receive better care, health-care would cost much less, doctors would have the time they need to coordinate care, everyone would get the care they needed, and we would all be healthier if the health-care industry would follow the principles laid out in this book. Thank you Dr. Schimpff for this most valuable contribution to one of our country's greatest challenges.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2013Written for a layman to understand, the book examines a complex issue that consumes almost 20% of our economy. This book is an eye-opener for a topic that will consume a disproportionate amount of our time maneuvering through the complex healthcare industry. A must read by all!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2013This is an excellent book in which the author describes in some detail a vision for high quality, affordable health care in this country. Unfortunately the vision is not likely to be realized in my lifetime due to the myriad of special interest groups who prefer to maintain the status quo.
Notwithstanding the author's efforts, this book is extremely difficult to read at least in the Kindle edition. I estimate there are 1,000 typographical errors, misspelled words, incorrectly capitalized words, etc. The publisher needs to 're-edit this book and provide a corrected version to all who have purchased it.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2012Dr. Schimpff's experience and insight offer readers solutions to improve America's struggling health care system. Any reader looking for insights into health care trends and health reform should read this book to uncover innovative and non-traditional approaches to solving America's biggest financial crisis. Dr. Schimpff has a great ability to distill difficult to understand concepts into simple solutions for moving ahead.
The Future of Health-Care is a great read for anyone wanting to learn more about today's issues and tomorrow's solutions.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2014Well written summary of challenges health care system in the US currently faces. It also offers explanations for why we are where we are and helpful solutions. Most importantly, I found that many examples or scenarios are relevant to my daily clinical practice. Medical schools teach us about Medicine but pay little attention how to deliver the best care in the best way. The book helped me to understand that excellent medical care is not possible without efficient health care delivery system. The book guides me daily in building this better system. I recommend this book to any physician, resident, or medical student.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2012I recommend this book to anyone who is open to exploring the MANY reasons why the US healthcare system is out of control. Dr. Schmipff's ability to explain these complex issues in a way that everyone can understand them and be motivated to be part of the solution to this conundrum. Americans want the best healthcare possible, but that's not what we're getting. Our healthcare costs are out of control, docs feel pressured to limit time with patients so they can see as many people per day as possible and patients want our docs to know us as individuals, not just another patient with "ABC" disease. Dr. Schmipff's a master at getting us back to basics while showing us the future of care delivery and all it entails! Jonena Relth
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2013Dr. Schimpff provides a patient and market-centric vision for US healthcare. He effectively and simplistically details the hows and whys of our current health crisis. More importantly, he provides a clear template on the whats, the hows and the whys for our next generation health delivery model. An excellent practical investment and resource to understand the future of healthcare!
