Deadzone is hardware - I checked
I bought this so I can do some tech stuff without sitting in my room, and maybe connect to my desktop when I'm not home. I was skeptical of the whole "non-working touchscreen" since it just happened to be described by other reviews as the start bar. Turns out, it wasn't the startbar, it was the actual screen. The deadzone consists of the bottom 6/10 of an inch of the screen - reaching from the left edge to about a centimeter away from the right edge. (This computer arrived in the mail yesterday - refurbished - labeled as "Like New") I bought the recommended 2nd gig of ram and installed it, and I put a more secure operating system on it. (32-bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with plain Gnome desktop as my GUI at the moment) I wouldn't pay for the Windows upgrade even if was 5 cents! I don't have extra programs slowing down the computer in the background and my panel (aka taskbar/starbar/start button) is on the top of the screen - where I always have it. I am still looking around for how to enable multi-touch on Ubuntu. I don't need Microsoft Office - I have LibreOffice. Essentially, I will get this doing WHATEVER I want it to do - with free software. (Ask your local nerd for help finding a user friendly linux!) I intend to look into a screen replacement to see if it would be worth fixing. I don't really need that area to work, I just chose this one because I am likely to try to scroll by touch due to the screen size. Pros: Finally have a netbook that I can put Ubuntu on Starts up fast (oh wait - I made it do that) I can scroll windows with the touchscreen instead of forgetting this isn't my TF101 Social networks don't require an app to work them. (refering to Android & iOS) Cons: It isn't the high speed laptop of next year, so I had to disable 15/20 of my chromium extensions - and they crashed it before I was done (However, this prompted me to install the 2nd gig of ram) - You shouldn't have that many running on a laptop anyways, yet alone a netbook The deadzone already exists. I noticed after a few hours. Hard to see the screen in a room with alot of natural light (from the ball of sky fire) It looks too pretty to put stickers on it T-T When I loaded my live USB of Ubuntu, it took a while to click on install because of Unity. (Your local nerd will understand what I mean.) Note: your local nerd is not Geek $quad ---Update: Nov. 8, 2012 I've now owned this product for over 5 months, and often use it more than my high-end desktop. Last week I installed Windows 8 Pro on this, and I'm loving the better touchscreen support Windows 8 has for it. Ubuntu had this problem where the touchscreen would not work after waking the computer up from sleep mode. Windows 8 constantly works. (deadzone still exists) Picture touching password is much nicer than typing one with the touchscreen and Windows 8 battery life is ALOT better than Ubuntu 12.04. However, you can't use Windows 8 apps because the screen resolution is too small. (by 268 pixels) Still as good as ever!

Purchased this tablet pc and was very excited about the prospect; however it has some limitations.
The hard drive is partitioned into 4 partitions that cannot be removed or combined. The drive is too small to be effective as a small partition. The tablet function is only in the sense that it will lie flat, it does not seperate from the keyboard or rotate image as an iPad or other tablet does. Even with these problems, I was willing to try the unit, but the hard drive issue is more than I can overcome.

I purchased this tablet for medical school so I could take notes in OneNote during lecture and studying. The tablet itself is well-designed. It feels sturdy and has a nice simplistic look and feel. I upgraded this unit to 2 GB of RAM and Home Premium Anytime Upgrade. It ran faster and works great for a netbook. That's about where the positives end.

As far as the main feature I purchased this device for, inking, it is really mediocre. The PenWrite software certainly made the touchscreen easier for inking, but it is very far from perfect. I got many stray marks while resting my palm on the screen while writing. Also, sometimes inking input would not be detected at all; or it would make my strokes look jagged. Finally, another annoyance was that it would detect the input from my hand and the stylus as a double-finger tap which is used for right-clicking. It was very frustrating to see the right-click menu repeatedly popping up while inking, and sometimes I would accidently click cut and delete half of what I had just drawn/written.

Then, the killer. Just last night, the bottom edge of the touchscreen stopped detecting any kind of input. So, I cannot use my stylus or the finger to touch anything on the taskbar. I can still use the rest of the screen, but who knows when that will die too. I had read reports online about this touchscreen issue but decided to take the chance. I should have listened to those reviews.

Fortunately, Amazon will be refunding my purchase, and I will be looking for a new tablet PC that has better inking technology. I strongly recommend you do not purchase this tablet.

I also received this netbook as part of the Nvidea legal settlement. It is a poor replacement for the HP Tablet notebook it is replacing, but it is better than nothing. The notebook it is replacing was completely dead.

I've upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium from the "Starter" version supplied with the unit. Why ASUS ships it with the "Starter" version is hard to understand. The touch scrreen requires the upgrade to be fully functional.

I also upgraded it to 2 GB of RAM. It is interesting to note that the available slot for a RAM upgrade is empty from the factory. There is 1 GB of RAM installed internally. this is not discussed in the available documentation. I contacted ASUS technical support to determine the correct parts to do the upgrade since it is not addressed in the available documentation. The response that I received said to use a 2 GB module installed in the available slot. They also provided the specs for the type of RAM to use. I purchased that part and installed it. At first it appeared to be working as the netbook was now reporting 2 GB of RAM installed. However, there was a problem with powering the unit on. About 50% of the time it would not start. I removed the module that I installed and the problem disappeared, reinstalled it and the problem reoccured. I contacted the RAM manufacturer as I thought the module may have been bad. After holding an email dialog with Crucial, they felt that I had the wrong module installed. Per Crucial it should just be a 1 GB module to supplement the internal 1GB of RAM. A new 1 GB module was purchased from Crucial and installed. It works perfectly and I have had no power on problems. The information provided by ASUS was incorrect. Anyone else performing this update should go to the Crucial website and us their available tools to determine the required module. I am waiting to see if ASUS will take responsibility for me purchasing the wrong module and refund the cost of it.
