Palin Cashes-in AGAIN on Her Special Needs

For most families, the addition of a child with “special needs,” represents a huge financial burden. If you are a family with a special needs child in Alaska the financial drain might be even bigger than in other states. Before resigning as Governor, Sarah Palin turned down $170 million of federal stimulus money for education, including money that would go for programs to help economically disadvantaged and special needs students. Anchorage School Superintendent Carol Comeau said she was “shocked and very disappointed” that Palin would reject money that would have been used for job preservation, teacher training, and helping kids who need it.

Remember when Palin said:

“I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House.”

Maybe she meant that she would only be a “friend” to special needs families if she were elected Vice President? Maybe she meant that the “friend” of those families in the White House would be Trig?

From the moment Sarah Palin was introduced on the national scene she has used Trig as a prop or trophy. “Trig’s been front-and-centre in her quest for power, dragged around at all hours and to all places, wielded as a weapon in the culture wars, cited as evidence of Palin’s conservativebona fides, used by her running mate John McCain to showcase her supposed expertise on special needs children (although he constantly refers to autism and not Down syndrome), and served up as a prop in one photo opportunity after another. “  Parents of Down syndrome children have objected to the way that Palin treats Trig:

“exposing Trig to who-knows-what, all the things to which Down syndrome babies with their fragile immune systems are especially vulnerable….

The whole thing is an insult. She is using him as a tool.”

“I know I’m not the only special needs parent who has been disgusted by the manner in which Palin’s infant son has been passed around as a political prop on the campaign trail.

In previous posts I have specifically addressed the issue of Palin’s use and abuse of families with “special needs.”  I have previously reported that Palin had not donated to the National Down Syndrome Society.  Once again, Palin is using her connection to Trig for personal financial gain.

Sarah Palin has aligned herself with the “Exceptional Foundation of Baldwin County, of Point Clear, Alabama. Point Clear has a population of 1876 people.  The Exceptional Foundation describes itself as:

“ The Exceptional Foundation is a new 501(c)3 serving individuals from age five through adulthood. With your support, The Exceptional Foundation will begin providing programs and services starting in the Fall of 2011.

“There is much work to be done and many funds to be raised before we open our doors for these joyful, special needs people. “

“…and hope to have a program to help mentally and physically challenged Baldwin County residents running by September, group organizers said.”

Given the fact that the “foundation” was so new and is not providing any services at the moment I called the “Exceptional Foundation” to find out more. The number listed for the foundation is 251-990-2271. When a woman answered the phone she answered by saying “Callahan and Associates.” Robert Callahan is the organizer of the Exceptional Foundation.. When I asked to get a copy of the “Foundation’s” 501 (c) 3 form, to confirm that the organization has been approved by the IRS as a charitable foundation, she advised me that the application is still “pending.”

I was able to confirm from the woman who answered the phone at Callahan and Associates that Sarah Palin would be paid for her appearance, but the amount was confidential. I wonder if Palin will be getting paid a percentage of the take? I wonder if the Exceptional Foundation will be approved as a non-profit? If not I guess Mr. Callahan will just have to keep any money raised at this event. If they are approved as a non-profit, I wonder what salary would be paid to Mr. Callahan? Certainly we know from documents of the Candie’s Foundation (the one Bristol works for) that some people who work for charitable foundations can make millions of dollars in salary, which is treated as an expense to the charitable foundation. For example, here is the “reportable compensation from related organizations” listed for the Candie’s Foundation:

Neil Cole,President/Founder $9,309,609.00

Warren Clamen, CFO $1,735,494.

Andrew Tarshis General Counsel $1,735,494

Whether the Exception Foundation is approved as a non-profit or not, it would appear that Sarah Palin and Mr. Callahan will have their “special needs” satisfied. The only question is whether the “SPECIAL NEEDS” of any children in Point Clear will be met.

  1. Since it costs $1000 to sit at one of the special tables and have your picture with Ms. Fraud, I imagine Sarah will get her usual for saying nothing, that Mr. Callahan will get his cut, the food suppliers will get theirs, and then this “charity” will fold up its tent just like the others have. Meanwhile, the kids and adults who need these promised services will suffer, just as Trig has. How does this woman sleep at night?

  3. Sounds like grifters employing a grifter to maximize the “total grift.” Plus, the “star of the grift” adds to her “helping the special needs people” creds and picks up some cash. It’s a win-win situation for the grifters.

  4. Great work, Malia! I read about this and was considering calling them myself. Something smells fishy here. I wouldn’t do a fundraiser for an organization that doesn’t have their 501(c)3 approved yet and has absolutely no track record. That’s crazy! There is a real, established Exceptional Foundation in Alabama (Birmingham), but that’s not who she’s fundraising for. I wonder if she thinks she’s going to the already established one–it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if she didn’t even know who she was working for.

  5. That foundation is just another money laundering scheme set up by some one who wants to cash in on the grifter’s name. It’s the same as those other fly by night crooks who set up other “foundations” to promote her word salad. The fact that it is not even a non-profit yet speaks volumes.

  6. Anyone who hires her will be under intense scrutiny.

She twittered a thank you to all who are obsessed with her because she and her dimwitted daughter are raking it in. The it being dollars provided by her backing through shill corps and charity type events.

Palins presence is going to spotlight all these backroom bestowers of financial largess on the fundi puppet and her offspring.

I think the Candies foundation will go pfffft

. I doubt thefoundation will survive Bristol Palin. Why should people pose for free when she is raking in more than a quarter of a million.

Soon Bristol will be her own brand and her name protected. What is she going to promote next?

They may have gotten publicity, but the Palins are notorious. Bad publicity is not good. Eventually the notoriety becomes a burden.

They may be celebrity fodder now, but soon they will be crowing a different tune.

  7. Sarah Palin could lend her celebrity to the biggest foundations in the world for children with Down Syndrome or other special needs. Instead, she chooses tiny nonprofits like this one who have the potential to impact only a handful of people. I’m guessing the big guys didn’t want to pay her and Sarah Palin doesn’t know the first thing about the world “charity.”

And how in the world can this tiny, not-yet established nonprofit from a backwater Alabama town afford to pay for a heavy weight like Sarah Palin? Maybe the money-laundering idea isn’t so crazy.

  8. And also, too, does anybody else find it more than a little bit creepy that Neil Cole made more than 9 million dollars last year (and his two buddies made nearly 2 million dollars each) focusing on the sex lives of teenage girls?

  9. once again it sounds like some scammy, scummy organization created to siphon money to sarahpac and ultmately palin’s pocketbook. People need to make a stink the way they did in Denver when they canceled the whole thing because people were saying mean things about sawah.

  10. There is already a charity with the exact same name in Birmingham AL and they reference another one in TN but say nothing about this one in Point Clear…….. it does mention one coming in Baldwin County – which could be this one in point clear. Or perhaps not. I cannot imagine why a town of 1876 people would need this, the odds of more than one or two kids in that town having DS are minuscule.

By the way you can see this charity (the one that already exists) does have it’s 501 c3 –

Maybe you could call the Exceptional Foundation in Birmingham to see what the deal is with this splinter group. Why wouldn’t the point clear foundation mention that they are an off-shoot of the larger foundation?

      Like

      1. It is possible they aren’t an offshoot but are trying to make it appear they are. I figured Malia could call since she already has knowledge of what the one in point clear said. I find the whole thing very suspicious.

  11. I owuld guarantee you that if you do a little digging into Callahan & Associates, you will probably find a big oil connection. That’s how it works…Sarah’s oil cronies (the crew fromGiddings, TX) from her governor days set up dummy front groups in order to funnel her money. Point Clear is a resort town on the Gulf Coast, possible popular with the oil industry crowd.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point_Clear,_Alabama

“The median income for a household in the community was $37,305, and the median income for a family was $45,729. Males had a median income of $39,844 versus $14,556 for females. The per capita income for the community was $26,271. About 16.1% of families and 18.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.2% of those under age 18 and 16.7% of those age 65 or over.”

How in the hell is anyone in this town going to pay for a $600 ticket to hear Sarah Palin speak, when that is a whole weeks salary for many of them?

    Follow the money….

    1. VirginiaVoter,
It’s worse than $600.00 per ticket. That’s just for general admission..first come first serve seats. The tables for 10 people are $10-$15,000.00

  12. In reference to Candie’s Foundation and salaries–the 990 requires that people serving the foundation also report other income they make (“reportable compensation from related organizations”). I checked on this when the salaries listed exceeded the income for the foundation. The directors apparently don’t overpay themselves, just their “celebrity spokesmen.”

Here’s a link to the IRS info on that part of the form:

Thanks for the link, The amazing thing to me is that they evidently didn’t pay or do much that was not related to Bristol Palin, and the people running Candies evidently get paid a lot of money by someone…so Candie’s isn’t their full time job. Malia

    2. I saw that a couple of months ago. She can now draw upon PieSpy, LLC to “maintain herself for public consumption” like most performance artists do… hair, makeup, wardrobe, childcare, nails, buses, airfare, everything… and SarahPAC funds / pays the bills for Pie Spy, LLC!!

WHEN will the IRS pull their collective heads out of their azzes and pay attention?

      1. so when exactly is she going to start getting her hair, make-up and wardrobe done by a professional? Presently it looks like piper picks out her clothes, trigg applies her make-up and a stray cat does her hair.

  15. Malia, what I’m having trouble with here is that Point Clear in Baldwin County has only 1,876 people. Now, I’m not great on math, but upon checking the stats, I found that on average there are 6 handicapped children for every 1,000 births. The 1,876 population figure doesn’t take in the whole county, of course, but it does give rise to the question of how many exceptional children there actually are in Baldwin County.

Now add to this that Point Clear’s per capita income is $26,271, and median income for households in community is $37,305. As was pointed out up thread, $600 per ticket would be an extravagance most could ill afford. Also, who would pay $15,000 to $10,000 for a “sponsors’ table? How much will Palin charge for expenses and speaker’s fee? Who is picking up the tab? And how many exceptional children could have been adequately cared for with direct donations? In fact, how many children are there in Baldwin County in need of special care?

Adding to this mystery is the fact that the nonprofit status of this fledgling (possibly offshoot) organization is still “pending, which raises the question of how anyone could write the cost of their tickets or sponsorship off as an IRS charitable donation. And if they couldn’t write it off as a charitable donation, why would they do so, when there are so many other valid nonprofits in need of financial support?

Not saying everything is not on the up and up. Just saying that on the basis of what we know so far, this doesn’t pass the smell test.

  16. I think the Exceptional Foundation is doing everything EXCEPT helping those with special needs…..there truely IS something fishy here as someone above commented! I hope no one buys tickets and it bombs….maybe someone should write a letter to the editor in the local paper to make folks aware of this sham!
