The American Friends Service Committee, a non-denominational service organization, was formed by Quakers during World War I. After World War II, the AFSC was awarded the Nobel Prize for providing silent assistance from the nameless to the nameless in support of world peace. During the Vietnam War, the AFSC opened a branch at the Quaker Meeting House in Manoa and has worked quietly in the community ever since. HPR's Noe Tanigawa reports.
The American Friends Sevice Committee celebrates its 40th Anniversary in Hawai'i with a "Spirit in Action" dinner Saturday, September 13th. The event at KCC's Ohi'a dining room offers entertainment and catering by KCC's Culinary Department. Today is the last day to reserve a ticket by calling AFSC Hawai'i at 988-6266. 2008 Spirit in Action Honorees are Zen teacher, Robert Aitken, Physician and activist Fred Dodge, and the founders of Halau Ku Mana Hawaiian Charter School, Noelani Goodyear-Ka'opua and Keola Nakanishi.
The Honolulu Symphony's majestic new season opens Saturday night at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. Andre Watts performs the thrilling Second Piano Concerto in an all-Brahms program. This long-awaited concert launches the first Symphony season programmed entirely by Principal Conductor, Andreas Delfs. HPR's Noe Tanigawa reports.
"Andre Watts Plays Brahms" in the Honolulu Symphony's 2008-2009 Season Premiere Saturday and Sunday at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. All are invited to a free Concert Conversation with Andre Watts hosted by HPR's Gene Schiller one hour before each performance.
The 2008 Maui Writers' Conference is on the road this weekend at the Hawaii Convention Center to accommodate increasing demand and be closer to both attendees and amenities. Most of the three day event will consist of presentations and private coaching sessions by successful writers, publishers and agents. HPR's Noe Tanigawa spoke with a high profile literary agent who has helped her clients earn millions through their writing.
In 2002, an after school-drama program at Kawananakoa Middle School was established in the school's auditorium. The Young Artists Program slowly expanded to include the entire Roosevelt High School complex. Now, the program's founder, Brian Lee Sackett has converted a portion of the backstage into venue for adventuresome theatre. HPR's Noe Tanigawa takes you there.
On Mondays, traffic heats up rapidly on Kamehameha Highway through Pearl City. Few passing motorists realize that adjacent the Home Depot is a lush educational resource, the Urban Garden Center, eager to provide encouragement and expertise to O'ahu home gardeners. HPR's Noe Tanigawa reports.
