Convicted colonel tries to cut child support payments

Retired Col. Scott Carlson seeks a reduction in his court-ordered child-support payments.

A retired Army colonel who was convicted last week of trying to switch a paternity test is now seeking a reduction in his court-ordered child support payments.

Col. Scott Carlson, 53, of Swansea, Ill., for a year has been paying $991 in support for a 10-year-old girl he fathered by a former enlisted soldier.

In a letter to the Cumberland County Domestic Relations Office, Carlson claims that figure should be reduced because he is now making less than half of the $10,000 he earned monthly while on active duty.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Derek Clepper, domestic relations counsel, said he will oppose any support cut for Carlson.

A county jury convicted Carlson on multiple fraud charges after concluding he had a fellow Army War College classmate take the paternity test for him in April 2007.
