One of the bigger losers, with a 20% cut in the Whitehall grant to the police and a 23% cut in the justice ministry's budget for probation, prisons and the courts.

Chief constables say the police service faces losing 28,000 jobs over the next four years. Justice ministry estimates put possible prison and probation job losses at over 9,000. Youth offending teams, locally funded, have been particularly hit.
