MONTROSE, CO – Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Joshua Bagley and the Surgical Services team at Montrose Regional Health recently completed the first total ankle replacement surgery in Montrose.

“I’m very excited at the opportunity to provide Total Ankle Replacements to residents of the Western Slope. I am hopeful that this will help patients suffering from debilitating ankle pain return to what they love doing,” said Dr. Joshua Bagley, orthopaedic surgeon at Western Slope Orthopaedics. “Being able to perform this procedure in a small town like Montrose is a great honor, and I hope that this will be the first of many.”

“Montrose Regional Health is proud to facilitate the first Total Ankle Replacement in Montrose history,” said Jeff Mengenhausen, CEO of Montrose Regional Health. “This is yet another confirmation that Montrose is home to some of the most advanced care in the region.”

Total ankle surgery, also known as total ankle arthroplasty, involves the replacement of the existing joint with prosthetic parts specifically designed for the patient. This differs from ankle fusion (ankle arthrodesis), which involves fusing the bones that make up the ankle joint in order to alleviate the pain from the movement of the arthritic joint. Total ankle procedures offer an alternative surgery for some patients, as the prosthetic parts allow for greater range of motion and more natural movement. This provides similar pain relief while maintaining ankle motion, ultimately allowing patients to maintain active, healthy lifestyles.

Dr. Bagley utilizes the Stryker Prophecy® Surgical Planning System to prepare for total ankle replacements. This system utilizes x-ray and commuted tomography (CT) technology to take a comprehensive three-dimensional visualization of the area before the operation, indicating where to make bony resections and which implant is right for the patient. These images guide the surgeon in pre-operations, leading to less time in the operating room, quicker recovery time, and a well-balanced, functional ankle replacement.

Montrose Regional Health has a reputation for offering advanced care often associated with large cities. In April, the hospital announced it had completed the first Inspire Therapy procedure in Montrose for patients with obstructive sleep apnea.
