Take a walk with me!
“Life is very short and what we have to do must be done in the now.” --Audre Lorde
Dear Friends,
This year marks my second participation in the Breast Cancer 3-Day, a 60-mile walk to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research and treatment. Thank you for your continued support as we fight this terrible disease, and know that every dollar you give makes a difference!
Let's talk about early detection. Mammograms may sound uncomfortable and even scary--but they are the best way to save lives. In the past few weeks, two women have told me how they caught cancer early through routine mammograms. The good news is this: with chemotherapy, radiation, and lumpectomy, both are doing extremely well. They are active moms and professionals. All women should learn to examine their own breasts, and schedule mammograms regularly after age 40.

Breast cancer hurts not only friends and families; it also harms our public and political life. As Rachel Carson was writing _Silent Spring_, cancer was spreading through her body; she died at 54. How much wiser would our society be if we'd had her guidance through the environmental crises of the last few decades? This is just one example, but there are so many more. Please let me know if there is anyone you'd like me to name on this web site -- we should all be aware of how many of our society's important voices have been lost to this disease.
Thank you to all of you who give to the Breast Cancer 3-Day. And thank you, especially, to many survivors I've met through the 3-Day; your bravery keeps me walking.
