This is such a beautiful, beautiful romance story; one with very believable characters dealing with real-life situations. I don't want to go into too much detail about the story. But..... I will say that what I loved about it the most about this story, was that there was no instant fixes. No instant love connection, either. Friendship, sure. Total trust between the two, you betcha'...but there was no sudden claims about instantly falling in love, even after sharing one night of heated passion together.
They did what they thought was right at the time for them, and decided not to jump into marriage just because that's what others would have expected.
This book was absolutely the sweetest love story I have read recently, and I would highly recommend it to everyone.
The two main characters were well developed and the dialogue felt real, not forced. There was the right amount of angst and joy to give the story depth. You knew where it was leading from the very beginning but it still felt fresh and exciting when it all came together. It was different yet realistic.
I expected a complete "fluff" read and instead was treated to substance. I'll read more of Ms. Arnold's books. The free download made it easy to take a chance and I'm glad I did.
They trust each other so implicitly that, as they mature to the age of experimentation, they dare to practice kissing on each other. Who else could you trust with that excruciating experience besides your best friend?
But traumatic events pull them apart. When they meet again years later, Kip is a devastated widower stumbling through life as a shadow and Shelley is a bitter woman who knows better than to trust any man in a love relationship.
Here are two fine, kind people who struggle to find their path back to together, but now as life mates as well as soul mates. This is a romance, so I'm not telling tales out of school when I say they succeed, but you will be surprised at and immensely satisfied with just how magic the moments are when they do.
Few can match Arnold when it comes to touching your heart, warming the cockles of your soul and making you say to yourself, "Yes, that's exactly what that funny/painful/oh-so-serious life experience is like."
This is one of the most unusual romances I've ever read. Ms. Arnold hooked me instantly, and I found myself immersed in the story of two children from different backgrounds spending summers together--growing up together--on Block Island. When love between them emerges, heartbreak soon follows...and follows.
I've come late to this party and so find it unnecessary to list plot elements in my review. You can read all about them in others posted here. I will say this: Ms. Arnold wrote a story here incorporating strong, personal psychological elements, which resonated deeply with me. The power of forgiveness, the ability to forget, the willingness to trust, and the need to embrace life as it is, not as it might have been, are all captured to perfection in this book. I look forward to reading it again, and to reading more of Judith Arnold's titles. She is an excellent writer.
The story then picks up fifteen-years later and we discover that Kip also has a past to overcome. The friendship is the corner stone Kip uses to build back his life. And still, something is missing.
This is a beautiful romance, with believable characters in real-life situation. It is sweet without being cloying. I especially liked that the problems are not resolved overnight and that the author allowed the passage of time to heal some wounds.
I did not find the formating distracting but noted a few spelling and grammar mistakes. I agree with the other reviewers that Kindle editing should be as good as a paper book. Still, don't let format keep you from enjoying this book.

It wasn't difficult to see where the story was leading up to.
Big gaps in time for both leading characters.
