Flyers Fans React to Sarah Palin [Fan Cams Added]
The much anticipated hockey mom puck drop is in the books, and here's the video of Sarah Palin being mixed-greeted by the Philadelphia faithful. Reports from those in the crowd and the fans watching at home seem to focus on the loud music pumped over the arena sounds, with many voicing support while others were vocal in their disapproval. Here's the video:
Let's keep the gamethread comments going in the previous post, and any Palin comments civil so we don't have to close it down. Puck Daddy and crew weigh in here.
After the jump, several fan's-eye view recordings show differing responses to the VP candidate, and finally the governor from Alaska visits Coatesy's Corner. Poor fella can hardly contain himself.
Palin gets booed pretty loudly by some fans, but you can see and hear more than a few supporters standing and cheering.
Then in this next one, she hears what the refs have heard here for years.
In this last shot, there seems to be quite a bit of support for Palin (along with a sweet Knuble Michigan jersey).
And finally, Sarah joins Steve Coates...
Did he say "a little more Zubrus?"

OBAMA!

Richards had the chance to break her shins with a hockey stick.

If Joe Biden had thrown the first puck instead of Sara, would Gomez have given him a kiss on the cheek?
Posted by: don.carmen | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 08:39 PM
Richards denied a smooch, and Gomez gets one? hm... ok
Posted by: yimm yimm | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 08:47 PM
How cynical to surround her with a beloved Flyer legend and her daughters...
The music was cranked to 11.
What a joke.
BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Posted by: ron | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 09:00 PM
Obama Biden signs in the background are classic.
Posted by: Obama | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 09:21 PM
I love how the music was pumped up huge to drown out the boos.
Putting Brian Propp out there with her isn't going to change the fact that the whole ordeal was a complete joke.
Posted by: Rosey | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 09:22 PM
@yimm yimm: Isn't Gomez from Alaska? That might explain it.
Posted by: Pete | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 09:37 PM
I bet you she smelled nice.

I'm glad I dont live in Philly anymore when the whole effing town supports Obama. F him.

here's to dreaming Palin was wearing a Flyers jersey and Scott Stevens was barreling down the ice about to lay a decapitater on THIS REPUBLICAN JOKE.

Obama = Used Car Salesman
Anyone voting for him his brainwashed
Posted by: Carter | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 11:03 PM
Look, all you need to know is
Obama: Columbia University, Harvard Law.
Biden: University of Delaware, Syracuse Law.
Palin: 6 shitty schools before she obtained one degree... in journalism.
McCain: Ranked almost dead last in his class.
Yep. I'm brainwashed. Obama '08
Posted by: Nick | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 11:20 PM
Ha they tried to use the kid as a human shield by slapping a flyer's jersey on.
Posted by: mattindc | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 11:23 PM
Look, regardless of your political leanings, this was just a dumb idea. You don't see Obama popping in for a rodeo in Kansas
Check out this election map from '04....hmmm where's the bluest part? http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/PA/P/00/

Sarah would be great for the game if she won. Wow, her interview with Coatsie was incredible. She's a genuine hockey enthusiast. Glad most fans were classy and cheered this amazing woman. Also, really nice of the Flyers players on the bench to tap their sticks against the boards in a sign of applause and respect. Whatever your politics -- I happen to be independent -- it was an honor for the team and the city.
Posted by: Richard | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 11:37 PM
@ Richard. I was there, and maybe it was just my section, but I didn't hear any cheers until the boo-birds stopped booing. It was overwhelmingly negative. Apparently it's harder to boo than to clap.
But I agree with an above post: no matter your affiliation, she didn't belong there. Cheap move by Snider to boast his own party.

does this mean mccain is going to do an appearance at a vietnamese POW camp?

Coatesy's Corner with Sarah Palin added.
Posted by: Matt P | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 11:50 PM
I AM VOTING FOR MCCAIN JUST BECAUSE OF SARAH PALIN LOVE FOR HOCKEY.
I AM TIRED OF HOCKEY NOT GETTING THE RESPECT IT DESERVES. IF PALIN IS IN OFFICE THIS WILL HELP THE SPORT GREATLlY
GO FLYERS!!

i think the hostility towards her is unjust and unfounded considering how little we know about Sarah Palin. Supporting Obama/Biden is one thing, but taking the 'too cool' approach and throwing out begrudging, dividing comments about her is just in fashion these days. Engage in some reality people, lay off the madness. These are historical times, dont be remembered as the fool who hated someone based upon few small pieces of information. I think thats called.. prejudice?
Posted by: will | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 12:41 AM
Ah politics. She seemed pretty excited to be there for the most part, but I think her fandom jinxed us. I dont understand the whole kissing a NY Ranger thing, I mean come on Palin.
Yes the Obama/Biden signs are great background to this scene.
Posted by: BFisch | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 12:50 AM
To Will: You may know little about Sarah Palin and her politics, but some of us boo justifiably. I don't agree with her, fundamentally, on pretty much everything outside of hockey. I believe global warming is man made. I believe women should be paid as much as men. I don't think the Bible should be taken literally. I think the world is older than 6,000 years old. I don't think we should pray away the gays. I don't think I should be getting exorcists in churches. I could go on forever here. Not to mention, no matter how
Posted by: Tim | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 01:46 AM
well-intentioned she thinks she is, she's not intelligent. McCain doesn't bother me, but Palin scares me to no end. Furthermore, ironically, most Palin supporters despise Obama for the exact reasons you lay out, whereas most Obama supporters make judgments on Palin based on.. Alaska reports stating she did, in fact, abuse her power as Governor to get someone fired.
Posted by: Tim | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 01:53 AM
fuck barack HUSSEIN obama and fuck all you America hating socialist for supporting him!
Posted by: mike | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 01:56 AM
Boos will always drown out cheers...I'd say it was about 50-50....I, however, don't think a person who is running for public office should be called upon to drop the first puck, or throw the first pitch, or anything like that. With that said, Srah is a pretty classy lady....Gomez grew up in Alaska, so that's probably gives a reasonable call for the little smooch there. This turned out exactly how I thought it would turn out, but I don't think any of our sport teams should make this a habit.
Posted by: DSD | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 02:21 AM
Ok as passionate I am about politics the people trying to debate it here need to chill out. For every Tim who precisely states, in an intelligent clear manners, their opinion there is a Mike who says something stupid regarding his name, race or other things. Obama is not an Arab. Just because one is a liberal that does not make them a socialist. Not even close. Just as all conservatives aren't bible toting gun carrying racist assholes.
Regardless I agree with those who say that they disagree not based on her political standings but the fact that Snider shouldn't have done this in the first place. There were plenty of people who would be much better choices that actually had connections to the state or city. Not only that it irks me that she was ready to go running in a Rangers jersey until the person gave her a McNabb one. Just stop pretending you love our city and our cities teams. She was given a personalized flyers jersey but decided against wearing it and gave no reason. Couldn't have thrown it on for the minute you were on the ice? Guess she couldn't even do that for the fans and team that were playing host (though ungraciously) to her

which of you friggin pathetic libmales boooed Sarah Palin?
Takes a real tough guy to boo a female...in fact while booing a female you complete the transformation from run of the mill libmale surrender monkey to squealing pre-teen girl.
So doubt some of you punks embarrassed yourselves in front of your young children as well.
no doubt you squeal for obama like a lil pre-teen girlie
you friggin' libmales are an embarrassment to the United States of America
Posted by: Marc West | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 07:46 AM
Marc West - I don't get your point. You are either arguing that
1. real men don't boo, in which case I'm sure you've never been to an Eagles game; or
2. women should be treated different from men, in which case you are showing that you don't believe in equality.
Please clarify which absurd position you are taking.
Thanks, Liberal Male

Unless you've been there as I have, Sarah Palins' interview with Coatsey not only was informative for the general public, but also a time tunnel for myself when, with my son being involved with hockey, getting up to drive to the outskirts for a game at such God-awful hours was commonplace.
Posted by: Sang | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 10:39 AM
I find it funny that republicans call democrats socialists when I can easily as call them fascists (but you know I have a temperment above that of a teenager)
I also know why they're angry too.
In Pennsylvania
Obama 53.8% McCain 40.0% (Realclearpolitics)
Obabma 54% McCain 41% (usatoday.com)
national
obama 51% mccain 42% (gallup)
Plus Pennsylvania hasnt gone to a Republican since 1988. Heck I get angry with my teams because they havent won since 1983 and if I saw my team losing again I'd be spouting too. Its ok guys, Obama's not scary, sure he can't bowl, but I've heard someone you like say "he's a decent family man, who I just have differences about."
Posted by: Brett | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 10:42 AM
and if Dems squeel for Obama, then Republicans get wet dreams over Palin

Do you support the Bush Doctrine?
"In what respect Charlie?"
Posted by: Terjarv | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 12:08 PM
I am not a Philly person. But I wonder if part of the booing is because their fun night of hockey is being politicized. That would irk me, especially if it was for a candidate that I don't approve of. Times are rough, and sporting events are escapes. Bad form to have her there in the first place.
Posted by: JD | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 12:18 PM
Funny that the video with more cheering is shot from the good seats downstairs.
Posted by: andrew | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 01:39 PM
God Coatesy why must you talk? seriously if McCain bites the big one in office and Sarah takes over if she hires Bettman as the Secretary of State I'm bailing to columbia
Posted by: Spectrum4ever | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Just going by what has been posted here, both pro and con about Sarah Palin being in attendence, one can only imagine how the magnificent media will take this opportunity and add yet another saga about the Philadelphia fanbase. Move over Santa, you're about to be replaced in the next edition of "Urban Legends of the Philly Fans." Don't get me wrong, I'm just as crazy as the next fan about out teams, but wait and see how the media will editorialize about it or, coming out of New York, Saturday Night Live.
Posted by: Sang | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 02:21 PM
@ mike.
the bailout ordained by the republican bush administration is a socialist takeover of the united states banking system.
i love america and i challenge you to find someone who hates the american people worse than this administration.
they've cynically used 9/11 for their own financial gain by using our military to secure the oil in the middle east that they are so heavily invested in. they've let a major american city drown. they've taken away our civil liberties with the patriot act. they've tried to politicize the judicial branch of the government by firing attorneys who wouldn't participate in political mudslinging. and now they're using our tax dollars to reward the heathens on wall st. who have squandered our futures with their greed.
make no mistake, mccain-palin is the same as bush-cheney.
@Mark West
the flyers organization, sarah palin and the mccain folks are cowards to sandwich her introduction between flyers legend brian propp and her children and then pump the music so loud that the television audience couldn't hear the ticket holders express themselves.
Posted by: ron | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 02:39 PM
Where I was the boos were definitely louder.
The music was boosted to drown out the boos. the security guards confiscated any signs with political content. I was sitting in section 222
Posted by: ed doogan | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 02:46 PM
Regarding the confiscated signs that Ed Doogan is talking about:
Its nice to see Ed Snider forces politics into the opener and then tries to take away the voice of the fans by confiscating anything with political content and blaring the music. For something that was about her being a hockey mom and not her being on the ticket which he endorses its nice to see he at least allows his loyal fanbase to express their opinion.

"which of you friggin pathetic libmales boooed Sarah Palin?

Yeah, you support the party/ticket that opposes equal pay for equal work, a woman's right to choose and has a terrible voting record for women's rights - yet you get your panties in a twist over whether or not Caribou Barbie gets booed. I'm so sure you would give Hillary a classy reaction if she were dropping the puck, right?
Fuckin dumbass.

"chewy libmale, it doesn't matter whether or not you got a receipt when you turned in your testicles...

I asked a question concerning the meaning of your post and you reply with a nonsense insult. You sure are a stereotypical republican.
Posted by: Chewy Wellington | Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 07:03 PM
I really feel for Sarah Palin's kids. The Alaskan governor's ambition trumps the wellfare of her children.
Shame on you, Sarah Palin.

I agree with the post about how the fans fun night was interupted by politics. I looked forward to this night for months and the whole week leading up to the puck drop all I heard were stupid wise cracks from my liberal friends. I have to hear their political rantings all the time and now its invading my hockey, pisses me off.
I dont want to vote for either party running. Republicans have proven to be liars of late and the Democrats (more so their supporters) talk down to people. Everytime I talk with a Liberal they cant just simply repect that my point of view is mine, they act as if I am just too dumb to understand Obama. Writing this I think Ill give my vote to the Republicans because although a lot of you get all over Pailin, she is more a "real person" than Obama/Biden.
Posted by: Mr. Butthole | Monday, October 13, 2008 at 04:58 AM
I think the reactions in the videos goes along with the ticket prices.
Lower Level = Republicans
Upper Level = Democrats
Posted by: gootman | Monday, October 13, 2008 at 11:04 AM
no tim, that might be your perception through the lens of a democrat. you're taking the most extreme interpretation of conservative views, which is understandable if you're trying tip public perception to the left. Just because im republican doesn't mean i agree with the most extreme interpretation of those particular views. Sarah Palin is an unknown except for what she says--which you dont consider, and then what the obama camp says--which you take as the truth, the whole truth, so help you (not permitted to mention the existance of god). What you're really saying is, aside from Tim, everyone booing and writing degrading comments was doing so with principles in mind (terrific insight). So, if her record bothers you, I can reel off Obama/Biden-negatives as well, but it would all be rhetoric in nature, just like your spirited jab.
Posted by: will | Monday, October 13, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Always good to see the sports community comment on politics.
Concern for her children? Were you worried about Biden's children or Obama's children. How about Obama pimping his daughters for a press conference and when that didn't poll well, it was a bad idea?
I see plenty of those bad ideas about Obama. He also seems to develop new interests whenever the polls suggest he should. He's a total Ivy League lawyer trying to "get real". The only thing real he's ever done is snort cocaine and chill with people like Ayers and Wright while they sit around talking about how much they hate America.
Sarah Palin at least is there at the game and is a lifetime supporter of hockey. It's not something that became an interest when she ran for office.
Palin/McCain!!!
