this company is capitalist in the sense that it is owned privitely and is being operated for profit but socialist in the sense that workers own it and get those returns

This is cool! If this is how one should run an efficient business that can compete in the free market then all the better!

At 6:30 I think he was a bit confused of what free-market theory and Marxism actually put forward. Free Market theory simply supports competition, all the things he then lists about the company are actually MARXIST values.

-being autonomous within the workplace
- having strict rights, and your own "agenda".
- Workers ownership of their workplace
- Democratic deliberation in decisions
etc
These arent stalinist principles of course, what people generally think socialism is

Marxist "values" are quite different from actual Marxism. This has nothing to do with the abolition of private property, nothing to do with government. Free association and enforced contract are up to the task. I will grant, however, that the values of Marx may have helped inspire this project. Classical notions of capitalism (unlike its perverted modern form) have nothing against people choosing to share and cooperate in this way.

"cutting edge capitalism". Lol its a Socialist worker co-operative. Capitalism necessitates a single person or a small group siphoning Capital for not working.

Capitalism can lead to parasitic groups but does not necessitate them. The idea of shared profits is not new idea to capitalism either, nor is the idea of flexible schedules. This company has nothing to do with government but instead is clearly part of the free market. The fact that you like the word "socialism" and don't like the word "capitalism" is either ignorant or very disingenuous.

It's incredible how full of shit some people are, and how they think capitalism must be exploitation by definition. I am sure they hate this because it's a free-market phenomenon, and one that isn't quite syndicalism or normal corporations. Good. I like it when they boil with hatred.

Chomsky would praise it. It puts the emphasis on the worker and ensures fair wages and respect of each individuals talents being rewarded. Falls in-line with Chomsky's beliefs. Chomsky is not a liberal..:p just an FYI.

July 2005
Some call it anarchic socialism, some cutting edge capitalism. At Brazilian manufacturer Semco, the workers have sacked the boss, and run the company themselves.

At the lavish reception, one of two receptionists meet and greet the great and mighty. But no-one really ever knows which one it will be at any given time. "'We are not sure which one will be there, because they set their own schedule" explains IT worker boss Joao Neto. There are hammocks to help workers think in comfort, and departments can choose their own furniture. Even salaries are set by the employees themselves, and bosses are just as likely to tell you to ask for more money than less. But although it sounds like a workers dream, the rest of the department keeps an eagle eye on lazy employees: "There is peer pressure for bad behaviour. If you're here just to profit from other people's efforts, you're not wanted". The easy going atmosphere has paid dividends -- annual profits at Semco are up to US$ 160m these days, from $ 4m when owner Ricardo Semler took over 25 years ago. Now he has turned his attention to teaching -- without the teachers. Like Semco, pupils at Lumiar primary school in Sao Paulo dictate the rules. Vive La Revolucion?
