This has been a project I have been involved with intimately. An interesting sidebar... of all the tracks I have been asked by Ace to either find on '45 (for label scans or perhaps for disc dubs), the most elusive one was JOANIE by FRANKIE CALEN.
It was simply impossible find a copy anywhere. As a last resort, I managed to find one from the songwriter (she is in her 80's!) To my big surprise, this record was originally distributed by London Records and I was able to locate an original analog tape in the vault! So this one sounds great.
Does anyone know the whereabouts of Frankie Calen?

I'm wondering if Vic Dana's 'I Will' is the same alternate take of that song that ERIC used on their CD. That take featured a completely different ending to the hit version and was also missing the harmony vocal. When I quizzed Tom Daly about it some years ago, I seem to recall he mentioned the hit version only exists in mono. To my knowledge, the original 45 version has only ever appeared on a Readers Digest various artists compilation

Nice to see a Danny Valentino track but how about his terrific rockin track "Stampede" being put out on a compilation. Did he only ever cut the three 45s for MGM. I can't find anything else be him. __________________ Peter D Bryan

Frank Gari's 'Lullaby Of Love' makes Only 'Princess' his only top 30 song not yet on CD. Maybe Ace or Eric kind remedy this ?

Frank Gari - A forgotten but very worthy artist. "Utopia" is one of my favorite records, perfect for its time. Terrific vocal by Frank on that one, very nicely produced as well. You just cant beat those very early 60s productions.
Was there ever a Frank Gari Lp or Cd?
Note to Bill Buster at ERIC: How about a Frank Gari disc with his A and B sides? __________________ Stereo rules!!

I can't wait to hear the Nicky DeMatteo song on this cd, and in stereo!!! All I have of it is a scratchy mono disc dub mp3 of it.....luckily I have two copies of his lone Diamond 45 (which Nicky's wife tells me he doesn't even remember recording...). __________________ Where is Tom Diehl?

Finally Look for a Star by Dean Hawley on a regular CD. I know its been on one other but hard to find.
Too bad an English Co couldn't put Garry Mills' version on CD, since he's English.

Henri: Why don't you put it to Bill Buster for his 'Hard To Find' series? As far as I know, the Mills original (released on Imperial in the US) is only available on 'The Circus Of Horrors' soundtrack recently reissued by DRG - how many fans are going to buy that issue for one song!
Re Marty's query on Frankie Calen, I don't know what became of him, however IMHO, his 'Joanie' is a pretty forgettable song. It came out on Spark label, however I'm not sure if it was the same Spark label that Leiber & Stoller started around 1954.
Re the post on Danny Valentino, I suspect the reason they've chosen 'Biology' for this comp is because it charted briefly for him on MGM in 1960. I like the song, however, I agree with Pete Bryan, his earlier 'Stampede' on MGM, was one fantastic record and it would be a worthy contender for Ace's 'Rockin' From Coast To Coast' series. The only other comment I will make is that I would have much preferred Bobby Comstock's version of 'Tennessee Waltz' to the Jerry Fuller version which is already available on a Collectables CD.

In reply to Tony's post... 1: Ace recently purchased the Dore label. Deanne Hawley's version of "Look To A Star" is on Dore and it charted just like the many other versions out at the same time. Since his version is, to my knowledge, not out on a legitimate CD and since labels like to release repertoire they own...connect the dots. The fact Garry Mills is English is not a selling point to a label like Ace. They released the Gary Miles version earlier and are now issuing Deane Hawley. Perhaps if the only version of this song had been by Garry Mills, it probably would have already been issued on Ace.
2: Re: Frankie Calen -- One man's "forgettable" record is another man's "boy, I wish someone would finally put this out on CD". It's not a great "artistic" record but is very typical of records from that era. The Spark Records that released "Joanie" was owned by Peter Paul (talent manager) and it was a short-lived label distributed by London Records. It had nothing to do with the more successful West Coast Leiber & Stoller label. Nor did this Peter Paul have anything to do with Mounds or Almond Joy (historical candy reference!)
3: Possibly we are saving Bobby Comstock for another CD. "YA NEVER KNOW!!!!!!!"
4: Ace has received many requests for "Biology" by Danny Valentino. And there are a lot of people who really think it is a great single, me included. This has never been out, not until now, on a legit CD from from an original analog tape source.
Let me just make this point. People used to complain that record labels were always putting out the same higher charting singles by an act and ignoring the ones that only made it to the bottom 50. This is certainly a valid comment and I think labels, especially Ace and ERIC, have and continue to be sensitive to that segment of the market that happens to like the less obvious chart hits. It goes without saying that because a record only charted to #87, that doesn't make it unworthy for inclusion on a CD. Back in the 50's and 60's, sometimes more than 100 records were issued in a given week. MOST of them never got played even once on ANY radio station. So to have made the charts back then even at all, what with all the fierce competition and rampant payola, was certainly an accomplishment.
Ace has consistently tried to mine the bottom of the Billboard chart and even to dabble in "Bubbling Under" territory to issue those songs that received little notoriety. This is why you'll find, at least with the new Teenage Crush 5, a lot of songs that were not monster chart hits. But in this day and age, with the health of the CD business being what it is and the high cost of licensing tracks from the major labels, legit reissue labels have to be very selective in the songs they choose to issue. Labels like to please the fans but understand they may wish to make a small profit while doing so.

Quote: Marty wrote: Deanne Hawley's version of "Look To A Star" is on Dore and it charted just like the many other versions out at the same time. There are no complaints from me about the inclusion of the Deane Hawley version of 'Look FOR A Star'. I was simply responding to Henri's request for the Mills version, which, despite being from the UK, actually charted on Billboard at position 26 in 1960.

Unfortunately Garry Mills' version may have to wait until the "LOOK TO A STAR" box set is released by Taragon at Christmas to coincide with the 47th anniversary of the motion picture "Circus Of Horrors." I'm told that it will include every version of this song that ever charted (all 62 versions) plus some real obscure ones, most notably the little-known polka version by Frankie Yankovic, the R&B duet by Rufus and Carla Thomas and the unreleased "b" side by Victor Lundberg (in first-time stereo thanks to a tape supplied by his son Morty who is now on his 8th tour of duty in Iraq.) There are also several hundred different Tommy Facenda versions each dedicated to a specific star in the Milky Way galaxy.
