Murray, Henry Threadgill, Olu Dara, Lawrence "Butch" Morris, George Lewis, Anthony Davis, Wilbur Morris and Steve McCall. What a freaking band. No wonder they sound like the orchestra from Alpha Centauri. In the follow up to the miraculous "Ming," Murray and company continue to astonish with brilliant arrangements and tight ensemble playing, counterbalanced with spirited and urgent soloing. RIP Butch Morris. Murray and Black Saint is always a winner. The title cut is a study in subtlety and restraint with careful attention to orchestration; "Santa Barbara and Crenshaw Follies" and "3D Family" give us modern, angular arrangements with free soloing by contrast. More dancing about architecture. 6000 stars.

Great music, but do not buy from Amazon. They sent a CD-R (nowhere disclosed on the page) that sounds as though it was made from low bit rate MP3s. Find the original if you can.

Oh, Lord, in the 80s I lived in Binghamton, NY and Murray used to come up and road test music before taking it back to the Big City. SO much fun. Ellington+Mingus+Sun Ra. This is the studio version. Once on NPR I heard Craig Harris play the trombone solo from Last Of The Hipmen on jus the mouthpiece and it was the coolest thing ever. Amazing arrangements! Murray and Carla Bley owned the 80s. It's sad I look back at that as the good times...
