Product Description
Led Zeppelin redefined rock in the Seventies and for all time. They were as influential in that decade as the Beatles were in the prior one. Their impact extends to classic and alternative rockers alike. Then and now, Led Zeppelin looms larger than life on the rock landscape as a band for the ages with an almost mystical power to evoke primal passions.
- from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame web page on the band s 1995 induction
It's rare that a group can truly rock today s world, but the arrival of MOTHERSHIP, the first-ever comprehensive 2CD Led Zeppelin compilation with the soon to follow re-release of The Song Remains The Same on CD & DVD and a concert event reuniting Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones qualifies. Produced by Page and mixed by Kevin Shirley, MOTHERSHIP's 24 monolithic tracks were selected and sequenced by the band, who also oversaw the painstaking remastering. Spanning their epic career, the unprecedented collection pulls immortal songs from all eight of the band s classic studio albums, one of the 20th century's most enduring bodies of musical work. Arguably the most influential and innovative rock band ever, Led Zeppelin has sold over 200 million records worldwide. They continue to inspire successive generations with their passionate, groundbreaking, genre-transcendent, mystic, heavy and blues-infused rock n roll. Forty years since they formed, the song indeed remains the same.

For years, as playlists and multidisc players put Led Zeppelin tracks into a mix, there was a perpetual need to adjust the volume when Zep came on. Their tunes languished in the haze of substandard remastering--until now, at least for the 24 tracks on Mothership and the final fullness of the new Song Remains the Same reissue. For its part, Mothership's crisper, warmer audio owes its heft to the troika of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, who helped oversee the mastering, bringing out untold shades even in the throes of "Heartbreaker" and the sinews of "No Quarter." It's an impressive sonic leap. Where tinny high-ends and muffled lows used to co-exist, fatter and louder depths prevail. It's ever more astonishing that Zep got on with just four blokes. You can quibble with the 24 tracks here (where's "The Ocean"?), but the band picked each track here, from the stone-cold locks ("Communication Breakdown" and "Stairway to Heaven," no, duh) to the robust throb of "When the Levee Breaks." As for "The Ocean," you can find that in fantastically full form, along with five other gems on the newly remastered Song Remains the Same, which shows up for 2007's holiday season on DVD, too. Only rarely have four lads from England made so memorable an auditory and visual blast. --Andrew Bartlett

- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2014I am fairly new to listening to music on vinyl, therefore on the technical side I cannot really provide a proper feedback. As expected, the records sound great. Now, I did noticed that the vocals are not as powerful as the instruments. I read it somewhere that this is due to the remastering of the tracks, and on the original recordings the vocals were more predominant. Tell you the truth, this didn't bothered me that much, as it sounded more like live music, but cleaner, as if you were listening while the band is playing next to you in a studio. It is fantastic. Mind you, this is a 24 tracks selection out of the entire Led Zeppelin discography, not the entire thing, and some might argue that some crucial pieces of music are missing. But even so, it still is great value for your money. Even the packaging alone would worth half the money. It is just brilliant. A thick black box with a simple elegant design, it is pure eyecandy. Anyways, as collecting vinyl records is a rather expensive hobby, this product is more than an agreeable compromise if you want to listen to Led Zeppelin but you cannot afford the buy all of they're albums. Also, it is more accessible in terms of availability.
I do have 2 nuisances, but none with the product, but instead with the service. First of all, with the order confirmation I have received a tracking number, which only works as long as the package is on US soil. Now, I live in Romania. I had no means whatsoever to track my purchase, and, as long as I give a benefit of a doubt for the foreign postal and courier services, I know have little trust when it comes to the local services. The second annoyance was with the way my purchase was packed. Instead of a fancy packaging specially designed for LP's (of which amazon has dedicated an entire page of how awesome it is) I've got a big box. In the box was my pack of records, right down on the bottom. Over it was some of that protective blanket or what, the one with big air balloons. So as long as the box was not damaged on the bottom or at one of its sides, my product had noting to worry about.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2008Actually, Robert's voice sounds pretty good, too... So maybe I should rephrase it like this: I never had to hear so much of Jimmy Page's guitar! Since I am not a big fan of his playing and believe everything that I like in LZ music was coming from Robert Plant, you'll understand I was not particularly thrilled, and up until the last moment was going to give this release 3 stars. But then... - hey, these are some great songs, an excellent collection!
Which brings me to address the younger audience, those curious about LZ and considering Mothership as a way to sample the music: *buy it*! Don't listen to the reviews here critisizing the sound. Because you haven't heard the old versions, they won't be in your head to spoil the impression. And the music is great. It is unique and has influenced many, many of the later bands and artists.
Now to the old-timers, my age (I'm 39) and older, those wondering whether this new remaster indeed sounds as horrible as some describe: well, it is not disastrous, but it does sound kinda loud. I honestly thought this wouldn't be an issue with me, and perhaps I wouldn't even notice, but I did notice. There is an excellent earlier review here, describing how the reviewer compared this remaster to the older one by bringing the loudness of Robert's vocal to the same, comfortably loud, level. As a result, everything else on the new remaster got overpowering, in-your-ear loud. I confirm that, and I wholeheartedly join those who disapprove. On the other hand, isn't that what the band themselves wanted?.. Isn't this *their* own remaster?.. And I do have two good guesses why they would have wanted it this way:
(1) Our 60-year old gods want to be liked by the younger audience. Nothing wrong wih that, who are we to judge.
(2) Wasn't LZ always a loud band? I was born in '68, but those older will perhaps remember, what were the early audiences impressions of their playing? - Loud! I really believe they would've likely be recording just like this in their days, had it been technically possible. Annoyingly loud.
My favorite LZ song, if I had to pick just one, has been Since I've Been Loving You. Listening to the Mothership version, I do hear quite a bit more detail. It does not, however, breathe with nearly as much emotion as the much rougher Since I've Been Loving You on my old LZ III vinyl LP.
ADDED 4/6/08: this album really *is* louder than others! I recently bought wonderful AKG K701 headphones AKG K701 Open-Back Studio Headphones with Flat-Wire Voice Coil , and these require long burn-in for their sound to fully develop. So I made a long playlist, set it on repeat, and have been playing it through the headphones the last several days. Because K701s are open design, you can hear the music very well across the room. Whenever Mothership's turn comes, it is *significantly" louder than the rest, including Metallica, recent live Black Sabbath album (just to give you an idea the rest is not all Mark Knopfler). Nothing subtle in this album, unlike so many of the Robert's tracks I love.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2007I own every album LED ZEPPELIN released, and I was ecstatic awaiting the release of MOTHERSHIP like a kid on Christmas morning.
Why??? The compilation on this set has my all time favorite songs. JIMMY PAGE has a profound gift with digital re-mastering. The songs selected are superb, no, better yet, they are legendary.
The DVD is outstanding with captivating footage from one of my all time favorite concerts, and MOTHERSHIP is a fascinating, phenomenal, extraordinary release that I will always cherish.
(IMHO - The cover would also make a cool T-Shirt.)
I listen to LED ZEPPELIN every day of my life. This is an exceptionally well done set - with a great book of info included. They did a first class job with MOTHERSHIP.
I want to say THANK YOU for bringing me so much joy throughout my life with your extraordinary music. I will always cherish all you do. MOTHERSHIP is sure to bring joy to millions - it's PHENOMENAL!
In ADDITION to Mothership, I HIGHLY suggest Led Zeppelin You'll definitely want to own both!
Whole Lotta Love,

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Collection.
There are some critical reviews here and I question the comments made? I suggest some are sour grapes from people who have not actually heard this CD, but don't want to spend the money to buy what in their view 'is just another re-mastered collection and the record company cashing in'. Well if you feel that way, don't whinge about it, just don't buy it! For those that want to hear the best of Zeppelin as you have never heard them before, then buy it. It's reasonably priced and the work that has gone into producing it is exceptional. I won't labour on, as there are some fantastic comments already about the technical presentation of this set. Suffice to say if you like Zeppelin, you won't be disappointed with this very good value double CD. The songs sound fresh and new and I have never heard Zeppelin sound so fine. I do have their complete catalogue, including the re-masters double CD, so have something to measure this against - trust me, it's astonishing how good this sounds compared to the original studio CD's. The clarity and seperation of the instruments is remarkable, I have not done a Pepsi challange as to me the sound is so much better, I don't need to compare - I can hear it clearly. The first CD benefits most and the reworked 'Stairway to Heaven' is worth the purchase price alone.
A great collection of the best from Zeppelin's catalogue and a VERY worthwhile addition to any serious rock fans music collection. Do yourself a favour and see how good one of the best rock bands of all time can sound...........
A solid 5 stars is earned, if I could award more I would.
(If you disagree after hearing it, them I will buy you a beer!).

5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfekte Scheibe zum Kennen lernen!
Ich bin 79er-Jahrgang. Bis Ende 2007 war Led Zeppelin für mich der Name irgendso einer alten Band, mit der mich ansonsten herzlich wenig verband. "Stairway to Heaven?
