Corruption a main obstacle for businesses: CPD

Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) on Wednesday suggested an integrated fiscal system to reduce corruption as it is a main obstacle for businesses in the country.

It also urged the authorities concerned to set up an independent office of an Ombudsman/Ombudsperson with proper legal, institutional, and operational responsibilities and facilities.

In a recent study jointly done by CPD and the World Economic Forum, 67.61% of businessmen considered corruption to be the biggest impediment to doing business in 2023. In 2022, the percentage was 64.6 percent.

The findings of the study titled "Bangladesh Business Environment Study 2023: Findings from the Executive Opinion Survey" were disclosed by CPD Research Director Khondaker Golam Moazzem during a media briefing on Wednesday at its office in Dhaka.

Moazzem said 66.20% of businessmen are also anxious about fuel supply in the next two years. And, 58% of businessmen said there is a lack of monitoring and supervision in the banking sector. And, 50% of businessmen also said they are unable to import products due to the ongoing dollar crisis.

The local think tank also recommends that the government should take the initiative to set up an independent office of the Ombudsman/Ombudsperson with proper legal, institutional and operational responsibilities and facilities.
