Format of Video should be ogg or webm

Posted on Aug 26, 2010 by Happy Rhino

Flash plugin is a thirdparty plugin. Now Web-browsers have capability of playing videos. I request to re-encode your video in webm or ogg format. If you encode your videos in webm/ogg format then almost all browser can play them without using flash plugin.

These videos will be available in mobile environment too.

Flash plugin is a proprietary tools.

Please understand this concern you have done a great job by introducing this website but it will be more good if you use standards like webm/ogg which all browsers can play without any third-party plugin!!

Please support webm/ogg formats instead of flash. Please avoid proprietary softwares.

Right now the videos are hosted on YouTube. YouTube is reportedly going to eventually provide WebM versions of all of its videos. When that happens it will be a no-brainer to change the HTML to use the tag. If you want WebM support before that, you are free to convert the videos yourself (they are under a CC-by-sa license) and if you serve them from somewhere, we could add the tag sooner.

I was not aware that you are using youtube. Soon or later, it will be converted into webm. tinyvid.tv can convert youtube videos into ogg. They also host too. but converting 1400 video using tinyvid.tv will be a difficult task. I can convert videos but I cannot host them.

Most of the videos are being converted to webm now. They can be viewed if you join the html5 trial on youtube. However, the video provided for download is in the MP4 format which is legally encumbered by patents.

Therefore, I would like to request that the videos uploaded for user downloading be provided in Ogg Theora or Webm.
