Old map reveals Derbyshire changes
Derby map from 1934
The Derby & District map shows how the then town had not developed on the east side of the Derwent

An old map has shown how Derbyshire and its surroundings have changed since the Second World War.

The 1934 map was found during a clear-out of an office of a BBC Derby journalist's grandparents.

Even at first glance the M1 is noticeable by its absence and many of Derby's suburbs are either little more than villages or non-existent.

Train stations are in abundance with platforms in Ashbourne, Ilkeston, Woodville and Castle Donington.

1934 Map of Derby & District

BBC Radio Derby's Victoria Holland said: "It was found tucked in a book shelf when we were clearing out the office - it probably belonged to granddad but grandma is a hoarder and keeps everything in good condition.

"When you open the map the first thing you see is Derby itself and I noticed straight away how much it had changed - it amazed me!

"The next thing I did was look for the date."

When compared to recent editions, the Ordnance Survey map of 'Derby and District' shows considerable differences throughout Derbyshire.

Chaddesden appears as a small village, Oakwood is not mentioned and the M1 and A50 are not even a twinkle in the road-layer's eye.

Ashbourne's St Oswald's Hospital is marked as a 'workhouse' and Borrowash has a windmill in full sail.

Although old maps are not uncommon the find prompted Radio Derby to look at some of the changes of the past 76 years and spoke to historian Derek Palmer.

He said: "Looking at this 1934 map, there's almost nothing on the east side of the River Derwent - except there's a racecourse, which had the straight mile right up to Breadsall.

"We had workhouses but we had no bus station. There was no Council House, nor was there a market or river gardens.

"There's a little village on the way out of the town - Crewton - which has now been swallowed up by Alvaston."

The map also pre-dates Foremark Reservoir, Carsington Water and much of the ring-road.

And there is a reference to a 'lunatic asylum' near Mickleover.
