Rudy Giuliani has made his performance on Sept. 11 the dominant pillar of his campaign, a strategy that has proved at once effective and controversial. While the former New York City mayor finds himself atop national polls and well-positioned to capture the Republican nomination, he has also exposed himself to criticism that he is overstating his terrorism credentials and crassly politicizing the issue.

Yet just three months before the first primary vote is cast, none of Giuliani's top-tier primary opponents have taken the bait.

Despite privately acknowledging that there is ample ammunition to attack Giuliani for his handling of and work after 9/11, the GOP presidential frontrunners have been either too cautious or afraid to speak out. Their silence underscores a strategic calculation that Giuliani's 9/11 record will be picked apart by Democrats, and other foes of Rudy; but also a fear that bringing up the terrorism issue could backfire.

"I'm not going to get into it at all because we are not willing to use 9/11 for political purposes," Jeff Sadosky, a spokesman for former senator Fred Thompson, R-TN, told the Huffington Post.

"I could go on all day about that," said Alice Stewart, a spokesperson for former governor Mike Huckabee, R-AK, before asking for time to organize her thoughts and never calling back.

To be sure, there have been multiple opportunities to go after Giuliani on his perceived strong suit. The International Association of Fire Fighters lashed the former mayor for failing to outfit first responders with modern radio equipment and prematurely ending the search for firefighters buried under the 9/11 rubble. Jerry Hauer, who once ran Mayor Giuliani's Office of Emergency Management, called the perception of Giuliani as a terrorism expert a "fabrication" and "lie."

"In the time I worked for Rudy," Hauer told the Huffington Post. "I never heard him talk about Jihadists or Jihadism or Islamic fundamentalists or Hamas, Hezbollah, or al Qaeda... The words al Qaeda never even came out of Rudy's mouth." (Read more below.)

Privately, Giuliani's Republican opponents say criticisms like these could impact the primary race. But one official from a rival campaign told the Huffington Post that the idea of going after Giuliani on these grounds hadn't even come up during a strategy session.

If they went after him, Stephen Wayne, Professor of American Government at Georgetown University, told the Huffington Post, "He would shout back about the need for strong leadership during crises, and that he was there and they weren't. Given the audience - the Republican constituency - any attempt to do that would backfire. It doesn't mean they can't attack him on 9/11, but they are going to have to do it in a way that won't trace back to them."

Not all of Giuliani's opponents have kept their silence. Rep. Ron Paul, R-TX, has repeatedly sparred with Giuliani over the root causes of terrorism during GOP presidential debates.

"I think it's interesting that [Rudy] continues to bring this up as a central point to his campaign when he doesn't really understand what happened on 9/11," Jesse Benton, a spokesperson for Paul, told the Huffington Post. "He doesn't understand the motivating factors and he doesn't understand what to do to prevent another attack." Giuliani's campaign did not return a request for comment.

And during Wednesday night's Democratic debate at Dartmouth College, Senator Joe Biden, D-DE, called Giuliani the "the most uninformed person in American foreign policy now running for president."

"It becomes obvious at a point where you are using the event rather than respecting it," Larry Rasky, Biden's communications director, told the Huffington Post. "[Giuliani] seems to have this campaign that says, because I was mayor of NYC on 9/11, I know everything there is to know about terrorism and everything in the world is related to terrorism. It is a view of the world we reject."

This past week presented another instance in which the Giuliani camp's invocation of 9/11 stirred the political pot. A fundraiser, on the mayor's behalf, put forward the suggested donation of $9.11. Democrats were quick to howl. "Unconscionable, Shameless And Sickening," declared Senator Chris Dodd, D-CT.

Yet Republicans, once again, stayed on the sidelines.

"I think about [Senator] John Edwards' comment - the war on terrorism is a bumper sticker slogan - and I think that having a fundraiser like that certainly doesn't help fight that statement," said one Republican Giuliani opponent.

Would you say that on record?

"No," he replied. "9/11 is too touchy subject, especially to attack someone on."

Don't these pinheads running for president realize that the job is to administrate and shut the hell up while America runs itself. We can take tare of ourselves. We don't need a self proclaimed protector and savior.

Until the government finishes destroying our best institutions, those institutions will serve us well. I wish one of the candidates would through them self off of a cliff. Maybe the others will follow.

Grown people afraid of questioning another candidate. People lacking that kind of integrity don't deserve to even be taken seriously.

and may I add,- Harrumph!

9/11 brought Americans a nightmare and gave Bush an advantage. Using this nightmare Bush's team broke up the mechanism of Checks and Balances in Constitution. Rattling this nightmare Bush made Americans to believe he could give Americans some kind of protection by talking tough. Bush even tricked the world by using this nightmare to dip his hand into Iraqis oil fields. What do American people get today? Casualties and deficit to Americans, civil war and destruction to Iraq. "Mission accomplished" Bush's orgasm needs more time to do it. Bush's team used this nightmare again for Rudy's presidential campaign. Do Americans are such dumb dumb. being fooled so many times already and still falling into the same trap again? It is unbelievable.

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that Rudy Giuliani's obsession with 9/11 is a symptom of undiagnosed post traumatic stress disorder? PTSD often results from exposure to one significant event. Did watching people jump out of the towers take a toll on his ability to handle life after 9/11? Has he been consumed by a need to make things right by retaliating against someone for the horror he observed and the powerlessness he felt while watching what was happening? I suppose the question is whether Rudy Giuliani is stable enough to have access to the trigger.

Rudy does have a disorder but it's closer to bi-polar. He's in an extended manic phase right now. The freaky "phone calls on the podium thing" is an indication of him spiraling out of control.

No, it's not PTSD. It's wrapping yourself in an issue so people don't see that you're naked underneath and that your inadequacies are hanging out limp and flaccid.

Al-Isra (Isra', The Night Journey, Children Of Israel) (17) - Roukh 8
One day We shall call together all human beings with their (respective) Imams: those who are given their record in their right hand will read it (with pleasure), and they will not be dealt with unjustly in the least. {71} But those who were blind in this world, will be blind in the hereafter, and most astray from the Path. {72} And their purpose was to tempt thee away from that which We had revealed unto thee, to substitute in our name something quite different; (in that case), behold! they would certainly have made thee (their) friend! {73} And had We not given thee strength, thou wouldst nearly have inclined to them a little. {74} In that case We should have made thee taste an equal portion (of punishment) in this life, and an equal portion in death: and moreover thou wouldst have found none to help thee against Us! {75} Their purpose was to scare thee off the land, in order to expel thee; but in that case they would not have stayed (therein) after thee, except for a little while. {76} (This was Our) way with the messengers We sent before thee: thou wilt find no change in Our ways. {77}

If a movie star can be a president or a governor, then it is nothing wrong for a major to seek that high office. Bush had no clue what and when the 9/11 happened. But, Rudy is different. He knew at least what and when after it happened. Rudy even got the first smell after 9/11 as he walk around that site. After his walk he probably thought he would be better than Bush to tackle something like that again if there is another 9/11. The ruin created by 9/11 supercharged Rudy. He got such power from the scene of ruin to lift him up and to make him believe he is the next man in the white house, so do he carries the sign of 9/11 with him all the time. He is the man of 9/11, My Lord! After Bush every American public servant will think they can be the next person in the presidency. It is a bad thing for American future, but a good thing for business of advertisement.

I'm a New Yorker who lived through 9/11 and he didn't do anything greater than anyone else who would have been Mayor at that time.

Move on Rudy.

I'm a New Yorker, too, photochick, and I agree with you 100%.

He's Osama's whore. He is basing his "entitlement" to the Presidency on an act he had nothing to do with but that he finds convenient. Based on his mayoral record, he has no right to anything.

The GOP won't say anything because they understand that Rudy was one of the top conspirators of the 911 Inside Job attacks. They realize that they too could be murdered or set up for a fall by attacking one of the key planners of AMERICA'S GREAT TREASON. They're scared, just like the Dems are scared of being "anthraxed" again with pentagon-made spores. That's why Leahy is such a wimp. Wake up people, Rudy is a great killer and master liar. His election may signal the beginning of a new American Revolution, bloodier than the first one. When Americans finally figure out what really occurred on 911 and who was responsible, will they lose their minds and start slaughtering the neo-cons and their pals? Quite possibly. Especially if the economy crashes at the same time. This whole GOP house of cards is getting shaky quick. That's why we're about to attack Iran in a big way, very very soon.

I have to compliment here: Citizenofmars posts scare the shit out of me, and yet somehow comfort me- all at the same time. I really am scared of the people in power, and how much we have already lost in this ridiculous war for profit. The only thing that comforts me, are posts like above, that make me supremely happy that people are catching on, and making an effort to inform others. At the very least, people who blog are also researching further on their own, trying to make better, more informed decisions-and not believing what the MSM has been shitting out for too many years now. I hope you stick around for the long haul of The Huffington Post-and keep challenging people to look beyond what they think they already know.

What do you expect from a bunch of Republicans who appear to be afraid of their own shadows. Thankfully Democrats like Joe Biden are MORE then willing to rip apart Giuliani's overhyped performance on 9/11, and his sub-par performance as mayor pre-9/11.

Giuliani is a coward who uses the brave dead of that horrible day, in a sickening effort to get campagin money and win political office. Giuliani is a disgusting fool, and the Democrats will mop the floor with his sorry ass.

If any of the other republican candidates want to win the nomination they had better start letting the fur fly. Giuliani is not the saint he claims to be. He is not the hero of 9-11 the first responders were.
all the other candidates have to do is remind the American people how they died bravely trying to rescue the trapped people only to become trapped themselves. It would be very easy to change what Giulianii is doing by putting him in the background and bring the real heroes forward. New yorkers know the truth about Giuliani these candidates have to tell the rest of America.

The candidates have to tell the truth to the rest of America, but they are not. Which is one reason why Rudi will win the Rep nomination. For others

Yeah. How they died.

Giuliani is heard on the police radio saying that he got word that the tower was going to come down and that they [him and his entourage] needed to get out of there.

There isn't anything on the radio where he tells his first responders that news.

And how exactly did he get advance warning?

Like San Francisco Mayor Wille Brown got a warning to not fly to NYC that day?

It's so easy to attack this little fascist ON THE FACTS: He wandered aimlessly around NY of his poor judgement about where to place the command and control office for emergencies! Even AFTER the World Trade Center was bombed,in 1993, Rudy put it there!!! He NEVER coordinated communcations between first responders of police and firefighters. He tried to stop the mayorial election in NYCITY so that HE could handle things...as if no other person could get it done. Thankfully, the courts told him to screw off! the creep was a failure before AND after 9/11. HE FAILED!!!

Rudy Giuliani has made his performance on Sept. 11 the dominant pillar of his his vast wealth acquired since 9/11 by his constant fear mongering.

Fellow repubs are in such awe of his successful wealth generating scheme they are afriad to criticize it or him.

rudy is a fake and a liar. his self imposed hero status on 9/11 is a blatant lie. armed with security, rudy raced from camera to camera, ever vigilant for tv exposure. 9/11 was rudys big day folks, his oscar winning role, he won best actor for impersonating a hero. unfortunately for rudy, there has not been another disaster for him to sturt his stuff, because of this we are constantly reminded of 9/11 and his role. 9/11 is all that rudy has folks, and even that should be marked with an asterik.
