Hydro Thunder this is not.

 
The third installment in the Ship Simulator franchise from VSTEP is rapidly making its way to port. But why is this installment titled as “Extremes” when I imagine sailing a ship to be nothing but relaxing?

 


 
Well, I think that realism is the keyword here. VSTEP have gone to great lengths to ensure that the 32 vessels that are available in the game react as realistically as possible to both the water and the weather. All of the vessels have been modelled using the actual blueprints to make them as realistic as possible. But the “Extremes” that is found in the title comes from the actual weather conditions that will be encountered by every would-be ship captain within the game. The weather will be accurate to the date, time and place of the ship, meaning that everything from a small speed boat to a massive oil tanker will experience everything that mother nature has to throw at them.

 


 
Players will be able to captain several ships at once and switch between them at will. They will even be able to enter a walkthrough mode that will allow the player to leave the bridge and explore the realistically recreated ship first hand.

 
Ship Simulator Extremes will have three main campaigns. Utilising the official GreenPeace license, one of the campaigns will feature a voyage to Antarctica to save the whales. As a further use of the license, players will even be able to sail the upcoming Rainbow Warrior 3 ship ahead of its launch.

 


 
Many of the missions found within the game are based upon actual real-life events. Upon completion of these missions, the player may be rewarded with video footage showing a real-life captain explaining how they dealt with the situation.

 
The game will feature a mission editor that will allow players to create missions and upload them to the server for everyone to enjoy. Given the massive community that revolves around this game, there will surely be no shortage of additional content to download. The developers themselves even have free DLC planned offering additional missions.

 


 
There will be a multiplayer mode available on release that will allow for up to 24 players to sail the same seas in different ships. There is also a co-op mode planned for release in the future that will allow players to work together on various missions.

 
Whether you want to sail calm tropical seas Bora Bora, save the whales in Antarctica or even try your hand at being a harbour master, Ship Simulator Extremes will be offering nautical nonsense to everyone on 27th August and will be available from all good digital distribution portals.
