Cleanup efforts entered their second day Tuesday after severe storms swept through west central Illinois Sunday night, causing damage in several communities.
The city of Macomb was among the areas affected, with part of one house's roof torn off during the storm.
“We’ve had pretty minimal damage within the city,” said City Administrator Scott Coker. “We’ve had a little bit on the northwest side, some damage in our cemetery. I think about three trees were knocked over and about five damaged, but that’s about it within the city property.”
Coker noted that while the damage was not as extensive as in previous years, city residents are encouraged to use the yard waste site in town.
“That is available for them to take their branches and items there. We also have the cleanup that goes on around town, so that’s all available with the information on our website,” he said.
In Camp Point, Ill., many residents were seen helping with cleanup after a tornado touched down Sunday night, causing significant damage to Bailey Park.
Friends of Bailey Park President Abby Bastert said she was grateful to see so many community members sacrificing their time to help with the cleanup efforts.
“This isn’t the first time something of this sort has happened, and that’s what’s really great with anything in this community,” Bastert said. “If someone needs help, there are people here that will step up and they’ve got your back.”
Bastert said several small business owners took time off work to help, and high school students also lent a hand Monday during their day off school.
“I cannot say thank you enough to all of the volunteers,” she said. “Right now, because of all the debris, the park is closed to the community, but we’re just trying to get all hands on deck so people can enjoy these beautiful days and get out here as soon as possible.”
