ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Israeli missiles on Saturday hit several sites in western Damascus causing material damage, according to the Syrian army. A war monitor reported the deaths of two non-Syrians.

Syrian state media SANA cited an unnamed source from the country’s defence ministry stating that Tel Aviv carried out a missile attack in western Damascus early on Saturday and claimed to have intercepted some of them.

The overnight strikes caused material damage, but no casualties, according to SANA.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said the missile hit residential buildings in the al-Dimas and New Cham areas of the capital. The UK-based monitor also reported the deaths of two non-Syrians.

A day earlier, blasts were heard in Damascus, but no casualties were reported. The Syrian army said it shot down two drones.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on regime-controlled areas of Syria throughout its nearly 13-year civil war, often claiming to strike pro-Iran militias such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah that supports the Syrian army. While it rarely comments on strikes attributed to it in Syria, Israel has repeatedly warned that it would not tolerate its arch-rival Iran gaining a foothold there.

Four members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including two senior military advisors to Syria, were killed when a residential building in Mezzeh was hit by a suspected Israeli airstrike on January 20.
