How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

A "Flash Mob" gathering of geocachers from 10:00 – 10:15 am. Only 15 minutes long! You MUST be present and sign a log sheet DURING this time to claim the event. Please BRING YOUR OWN PEN!

You've heard of MEGA-EVENTS? This is quite the opposite in a variety of ways. FLASH MOBS have gathered for other reasons. Come be part of this historic World Wide Flash Mob Event: dozens of events all around the world, coordinated to happen at the same time to bring together geocachers and introduce others (newbies) to geocaching. Thanks to iTrax and FoxTail for the original idea and for hosting the lead WWFM event in San Diego.

The event will last EXACTLY 15 minutes, not one second longer.

The event will begin precisely at 10:00 am (Mountain Standard Time) on Saturday, November 10th. The event will be held at the posted coordinates in Edworthy Park (north side of the Bow River). This is in an open public space.

The event will be highly structured and facilitated by volunteers. If you would like to be a WWFM volunteer, please let us know. Volunteer positions include: event videographer, handing out geocaching brochures to curious muggles, distributing logsheets, serving the event meal (i.e. toss Hershey Kisses into the crowd), etc.

Flash Mob Schedule of Activities

9:45 - 9:59 Mill about and mosey. Take a walk along the Bow River pathways. Be nonchalant and casual. Look like a muggle. Don't look like a gathering waiting to happen. Mosey as realistically as you can. This is part of the fun. We will seem to appear out of no-where.

10:00 One of the GeoKs will walk to ground zero with a bucket of swag. This is the signal that the event has begun! Be sure to get your log sheet and name tag from one of the event volunteers.

10:00 - 10:08 Mingle. Share stories. Brag. Trade swag. Swap trackables. Take pictures. Sign your log sheet and place it in the log bucket. Write your geocaching handle on your name tag and stick it on your jacket. CITO the local area! Enjoy the official "meal" of Hershey's Kisses (make sure to CITO your foil wrappers).

10:08 Prize raffle drawings – including the draw for FTF honours. Names will be drawn from the log bucket.

10:11 Time for the photo finish. Assemble FAST. Listen to the event photographer for directions.

10:14 One minute warning is called - "It is now 10:14!" Prep to leave, but don't "look" like you are prepping.

10:15 EXACTLY Wait for it ... Sears Tower will call “BYE – see you soon”. LEAVE the area (right at 10:15 in a disorderly manner / different directions). The swag bucket, any remaining trackables and the log sheets will be packed up and sealed away. The event area will be vacated without a trace!!! Anything that happens after 10:15:01 does not count as part of this event.

Only those participants whose names appear on the log sheets may log the event.

We hope to gather a "good showing" of cachers at this event. Please tell your friends and help promote the event.

Other things you should know:

  • The nearby washrooms are seasonal only and this is the CLOSED season.
  • You may park in the usual CITO parking lot on the south side of the Bow and walk across the bridge to the event location or you may park in the lot just off Bowness Road at the end of Shaganappi Trail.
  • Bring your own pen / pencil.
  • Everyone who attends a Flash Mob event anywhere around the world will have their name entered into post-event prize draw.

Please consider adding this event to your watch list, so that you'll be automatically notified in case of any late breaking developments.
