Australian Magpie [OP]: Biology and Behaviour of an Unusual Songbird (Natural History) Paperback – October 5, 2004

4.5 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

The warbling and carolling of the Australian magpie are familiar to many although few of us recognize that it ranks among the foremost songbirds of the world. Its impressive vocal abilities, its propensity to play and clown, and its willingness to interact with people, make the magpie one of our most well-known birds.

This insightful book presents a comprehensive account of the behavior of one of Australia's best-loved icons. It reveals the extraordinary capabilities of the magpie, including its complex social behavior, in a highly readable text. The author brings together much of what we know about the magpie’s biology and behavior, including her latest research on magpie vocalization as well as aspects of anatomy, physiology, development and health not published previously.

This book was very interesting, and I had no problem finishing it in 1.5-2.5 hour (with distractions) sitting.

I knew very little about these birds before I started, and now I feel like I have a reasonable 'starter' understanding of them. Unfortunately, as the book will show you, they're very complex creatures that we don't have much of an explanation for! Most of the chapters in the book shared a huge variety of tendencies or behaviors the species has, contrasts them with other related bird species, but in the end backs off to admit that while various studies have been done, the results are inconclusive.

I expect that a more exhaustive volume on the species would need to be double, if not more, the length. As these birds' behaviors are seemingly so complex, it would have been made better had the length been added to share more single-study details and information. If you can't draw generalized conclusions yet, don't set up the format to do so!

It's really whetted my appetite to learn more about these birds though (as a US citizen, I've certainly never seen one). Would still greatly recommend to the Australian Magpie enthusiast!
