[Mac] the application firefox-bin has unexpectedly quit

Post by orangejack »

I'm trying to get Firefox installed on my wife's max os x. I downloaded ff 2.0.0.11 and tried to install it. However, once it's in the applications menu and I try to start firefox, it won't load and all I get is an error message that reads "the application firefox-bin has unexpectedly quit". I click ok and that's it. Nothing else. It's like it's not installed or just not working at all.

I've searched the forums and google and this phrase comes up a couple of times but I don't see a solution anywhere. help?

safe mode frozen also

Post by orangejack »

Thanks for those sites, but they didn't help. It is installed correctly (I went back and did it again to be sure). It still didn't work so I followed the directions to open the terminal and start ff in safe mode. The box opens to disable the add-ons, etc and continue in safe mode. However, I can't click on anything in that box. Everything is gray and nothing works. Terminal seems frozen and if I close it, the safe-mode box disappears and I'm back to the same problem.

Maybe you need to do this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106712
repair disk permissions: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities

I really do appreciate your help so far. I ran the disk utilities to repair permissions. I reinstalled ff after that and tried to open it in safe mode. Same thing...it freezes and won't let me open ff. Tried once more to open it normally and of course that didn't work either.

So, with all you've shown me it's still not working. I just don't get it. Thanks. Any other thoughts?

orangejack,

I added "Mac" to the title of your thread, so it would attract other Mac users.

I'm afraid the problem seems to be beyond FF. You say that even Terminal freezes. What about other applications? Are they working well? What Mac OS are you using?

If you have the original installation disk, I'd suggest you start your Mac from the original disk. Once it starts, then run Disk Utility, but this time do "Verify Disk."

Well, I think it's even deeper. I tried the disk and verified, repaired, etc. Nothing worked.

It all started a while back when she tried to download an add-on for ff called Smart Bookmarks Bar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4072). After that ff wouldn't reboot. It's been this way ever sense.

Go to

"/Users/<user_acct>/Library/Application Support/Firefox"

and remove Firefox folder (put it somewhere). Then restart FF and see what happens.

Holy Crap! That worked! Thank you so much!

I had previously gone through and deleted anything I could find related to ff but I guess I never found that folder in application support. I just deleted it and tried ff again. It rebuilt a profile and ran like it's the first time!

My wife is so proud of me. I hope she never sees this board! ;-)

Seriously, thanks everyone.

That's right. By moving that FF folder, you basically forced FF to create a brand new profile. So, something in the old profile was damaged. Maybe it was an extension or theme or something else. For future reference, if you want a back-up of your FF settings, bookmarks, etc., that is the folder to copy (~/Library/Application Support/Firefox).

Firefox-bin quit message when using Facebook

Post by thehamster »

I've read through some suggested ways of solving the problem of the firefox-bin has quit message that causes Firefox to close. None of the suggestions have worked to get my browser back working correctly.

I am using Mac OSX and have Firefox 2.0.0.14 installed.

I can't think of anything that I have done to cause this to suddenly start happening but if anyone has any suggestions of how to correct it that would be appreciated!

I have already tried re-installing FF

Did you also try RobertJ's suggestion regarding the Firefox folder inside your user Library/Application Support?

Forgive me if I'm redundant, with FF not running go to

"/Users/<user_acct>/Library/Application Support/Firefox"

and remove Firefox folder (put it somewhere).

Also remove

"/Users/<user_acct>/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist" (put it somewhere).

Last trash

"/Users/<user_acct>/Library/Caches/Firefox"

Restart FF and see what happens.

If that doesn't work use your OS CD and boot from it. Then launch Disk Utility.app and Repair Disk Permissions and Verify (NOT FIX) Disk. I've seen your symptoms with disk permission and directory issues.
