State has no records of Berg's firm

Prometheus Methods Tower Services Inc., the business that cost Nick Berg his life in Iraq, has no records with the Pennsylvania Department of State.

The company that specialized in building communications towers never registered with the Pennsylvania Corporation Bureau, said Brian McDonald, spokesman for the state department.

McDonald conducted a search of the bureau’s online list of registered businesses, but found no matches.

The same search done by a Daily Local News reporter produced the same results -- several businesses contained the word "Prometheus" in their names. Only one is located in West Chester, and it is not related to Berg’s business.

Companies are not legally required to register with the state, but McDonald explained it is usually the first step an owner takes.

"You’d be very foolish not to register your business with the department," he said. "It is nearly impossible to exist without doing it."

Registering allows an owner to set up his business’s tax structure. It also establishes how the business is run, for example, whether or not it is for-profit or nonprofit.

"It is basically the infrastructure by which businesses are set up in the commonwealth," McDonald said.

McDonald added it is possible the business could be listed in the bureau’s records under a different name.

Searching the statewide yellow pages online found two company names containing the word "Prometheus" in Philadelphia. One is an Internet consulting business.

An employee at the second one, which is called Prometheus Radio Project, said it was not affiliated with the business owned by the local man slain in Iraq by members of al-Qaida.

Officials at the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue and the Internal Revenue Service said state and federal laws prohibited their agencies from providing any records they had of Prometheus Methods Tower Services -- even whether the company had ever filed a return.

"Any information that we get or is contained on a tax return I can’t release," said Steve Kniley, press secretary for the state revenue department. "It is considered confidential under tax law."

Tax records become public information only if a lien is filed against a business. According to Kniley, there are no liens against Berg’s company.

Bill Cressman, spokesman at the IRS’s Philadelphia office, said the only companies with public tax records are nonprofit corporations.

At least one person claims he can confirm Prometheus’ existence.

Jay Shur, who works at the radio station WCHE 1520 AM in West Chester, said on Wednesday he was in the process of hiring Berg to build a communications tower for the station when news of his death came out.

The station was awaiting approval of plans from both the borough and an environmental agency before construction could begin, according to Shur.

"There’s a lot of paperwork to go through, and the area we were looking at was a marsh- land so we had to get clearance," he said."When I do get the OK, I’ll have to look for another contractor."

Michael Berg briefly spoke about Prometheus during a press conference Thursday morning outside his home.

"My son was not over there to make money," Michael Berg said. "My son’s business, which was very profitable before he went to Iraq ..I will make good on anything the company owes anybody, but it’s pretty much going to be defunct."

It is unclear how many employees Prometheus had. Michael Berg spoke of a "foreman" during the press conference. However, Nick Berg traveled to Iraq alone.

    Pennies on the dollar?

I am writing this in hope of saving others a lot of frustration and wasted time. Over four years ago I saw a TV ad for a company called JK Harris who claim to have years of experience in dealing with the Internal Revenue Service and settling debts for pennies on the dollar. I personally had a debt of $13,000 from 1992 which had since grown considerably to $90,000. When I first called JK Harris they set up an appointment for me to meet with one of their representatives. Things went well and he told me they could take care of everything in 3 months to one year and that was over four years ago!
They have a phone system that is useless and their representatives never return your calls. I personally have had five different representatives and never saw anyone in person after the initial contact when I foolishly paid their bill of $4000 up front. Since then no follow through on anything.
I was just told recently by my latest representative, Latoya Yates, that they will get to the bottom of this matter immediately and that was two months ago with no return phone call.
So beware of these TV ads offering pennies on the dollar to settle your IRS debt and take my advice file an offer in compromise form yourself. Save time, headaches and $4000.

Why was a business owner traveling without a crew, tools, or anything to perform his profession? I am a General Contractor in the Telecommunications business and I would not be in Iraq looking for work. I would be making contacts and lining up the work and then going to perform. Why put your self in more danger than what is needed. I can only voice an opinion on what happened to a fellow contractor, but every person has a different idea. I have done a lot of reading on this unfortunate death, and my opinion is that I need to see more facts, and as time passes that will happen. Presently people have ideas and are letting their minds wander and wanting to place blame. We need to allow the media and the Gov't do their investigation and justice will prevail. One opinion that I would like to present is why would our Gov't be involved in this. What is it accomplishing, and what is to gain from Mr. Berg's death. Why was it televised? Our country is not in the mode for killing it's own people, and if they were to be involved why publicise it? I think there are more facts to be revealed, and then an accurate opinion can be posed by the basis of the truth. You have had so many stories counterdict one another and if you have followed this then you'd know that something isn't right and to pose an opinion now is premature. Remember to base an opinion you must have facts, and I see no facts why our Gov't would be involved in this mishappen. I do feel that Mr. Berg is being paraded for what reason I do not know. I know that this has devastated his family and a lot of people that I know. I feel that his family and his business has no bearing on this situation and that the task at hand should be being investigated as to why did this happen, who did it, and how did this situation get to this. Instead of digging the gov't, his family, and his business, the situation and it's facts should be being uncovered and investigated. If the facts lead in other directions than follow.
On a last note, everyone is upset with the treatment of the Iraqi people, and rightfully so, but what about how our people would be treated, they get beheaded on live wire, but were not killing people and we pass judgement on those who made mistakes, but not took a lfe in cold blood.

I hope this man was dead before he was beheaded, and I share his families grief, but please let us not pretend he was an innocent civilian in Iraq. The only sad thing is that the government seems to have been involved in his murder but want to load it onto Arabs, despite all the discrepancies between what a real Arab militant would look like and the burly American soldiers-executioners we see on the video

I find it very odd that the chair Nick Berg is sitting in is the same chair that Pfc. Lynndie England was photographed sitting in.

It is a horrendous, barbaric act, very much in line with the CIA and the US military record, especially in Vietnam and Latin America. The US is just reaping what it has sown for years: the hate of the dispossessed and the humiliated, which turns into desperate madness at the sight of a brutal self-righteousness that is shielded by weapons of mass destruction.

What I see here is that the body is definitely Berg, but he was already dead before the decapitation scene because there was no involutary flinching and very little blood loss.

Furthermore, Zarqawi has an artificial leg yet all of the figures in the video have both of their original legs as bestowed by nature and in good working condition. Right there all of you can conclude that the video was at least partially staged by someone, and there can be no other conclusion.

Furthermore, anthropological observations indicate the figures have Western builds, Western posture, Western movements and whitish hands.

The clothing is way wrong. The sunglasses are also wrong. These guys look like a rock star group posing, not Arab terrorists.

Berg was either found dead or offed for some reason or other and his body used as a prop in a western psyop. That much is exceedingly clear.

It is still in some wide dispute by no less than NBC's editor of middle eastern affairs that the words Al Qaeda were NEVER spoken in the video. Likewise throwing doubt in this situation is the fact that the 'leader' and named individual in this video's title had a prosthetic leg and was supposedly killed in an Israeli attack on Hisbolla besides.

Each member of the video seems to ambulate without difficulty and no one is splattered with blood as would be the case if someone was behaeaded with a crude knife sawing through their jugular.

Please be a little more careful before parroting the party line.

    Peace.

It's very odd that a Jewish man would travel to Iraq all on his own, doesn't it? What was he doing there in the 1st place? Building antenna towers for what and for whom? Was Nick Berg an Israeli agent working for the Israeli government?

Bring the troops home, stop giving 4 to 10 billion dollars a year to Israel, stop the confiscation of Palestinian lands. Enough is enough.

There is no big conspiracy here with the business filings, folks! Berg's company IS A CORPORATION filed in the state of Virginia. Said filing was done by his sister, who is an attorney.

I'm the mayor of New Castle, PA. This Berg guy reminds me of Gary Felasco. No scruples!
