Product Description

Product Description

A close-knit group of gay friends share the emotional roller coster of life, relationships, the death of friends, new beginnings, jealousy, fatherhood and professional success. At various stages of life's disarray, these young men share humorous and tragic relationships and always have each other to rely on.

After viewing the gay ensemble film The Broken Hearts Club--the subtitle of which helpfully points out that it's "a romantic comedy"--you might feel as if you've been offered a discussion conundrum not unlike the kind that Mike Myers's Linda "Coffee Talk" Richman would put forward: "The Broken Hearts Club is neither romantic nor comedic. Discuss." What it is, rather, is a gay male version of Steel Magnolias, right down to the funeral scene and hospital visit. While decidedly less melodramatic than that Southern chick flick, it still aspires to a kind of big-group love-in feeling that's only vaguely comic. And romance? Well, there's some somewhere, when the characters aren't carping about how the only thing they're good at is being gay. They all wrestle with their Big Issues--should Patrick (Ben Weber) donate sperm so his sister can have a baby with her lesbian lover? Will cynical Dennis (Timothy Olyphant) finally admit he loves just-out-of-the-closet Kevin (Andrew Keegan)? How will love-'em-and-leave-'em Cole (Dean Cain) feel when he's rejected by the closeted movie star?--but to little effect, despite some snappy one-liners and occasional keen observances of gay culture. Writer-director Greg Berlanti's screenplay still feels about two or three drafts away from completion, and when faced with stalling action, he opts for a montage set to one of many Carpenters' songs (covers, not the actual hits themselves). Kudos go to the acidic Weber for infusing what could have been a whiny character with a dry, intelligent wit, and the surprisingly charming Cain, who makes Cole someone you can't really hate too much despite all his faults--it would be like hating a puppy. If only all the characters were half as appealing. --Mark Englehart

When all my gay films were on VHS tapes, "The Broken Hearts Club" was a feel good movie that I greatly enjoyed. I also thought it was a good film for men just beginning to come out regardless of age. I thank Amazon and any one else for bringing this great movie to DVD. When it first premiered 20 years ago, Roger Ebert gave it "Two Thumbs Up!" One Amazon critic noted that the subtitle, 'Romantic Comedy' was wrong on both counts. I could not disagree more. This is a big-hearted movie that takes place just barely in the post-AIDS pandemic and is an ensemble movie that tells the separate stories of five gay friends in their mid-to-late 20s. There IS romance and there IS definitely humor. If nothing else, the gay softball team is a hoot. My favorite memory from my initial viewing 20 years ago is very short. Howie realizes almost too late that his partner Marshall whom he has taken for granted for too many years is, in fact, the great love of his life. He makes an impassioned apology to his former lover and vows to wait as long as it takes for him to win back the man he has treated so thoughtlessly. It may sound like a downer, but this really IS a romantic comedy and the audience knows in their heart of hearts that the former couple will come back together for a lifetime. One of the best aspects of "The Broken Hearts Club" is the fact that the lead characters are just average gay men who are struggling to find a place to fit in a world that is not always so accepting. Like the terrific film of the same era (2000-2001), "Big Eden," this is a film to watch again and again. Now, if Amazon or Wolfe would just transfer "Friends & Family" to DVD it would be an even more perfect world.

I rented this movie from Netflix and loved it because of the mix of characters, both race and age, the comedy and I have a thing for Dean Cain. He plays a great character in this hilarious movie. I forget the guys name, but the one who plays the Dad on Frasier is in this flick too. He did a great job as well. The code word that they use to identify a cute guy approaching was cool too. My life-long friend and I have a similar action but I think of him every time I see this movie. I suggest that you purchase this movie because I think that you are going to love it just as much as I do. It's kind of like the gay version of St. Elmos Fire. You will not regret this purchase.

When I first saw this movie as a recommendation for me, I read the reviews. Most of the ones I read were not complimentary. In fact, one of them gave it only 2 stars! I give this movie stars because of the acting, the story and the soundtrack. I used to be a fan of The Carpenters many years ago but as I got older, I changed my mind. Two of their songs are featured in this movie are strategically placed and made me fall in love with the music again. Each "category" of gay life is portrayed here in an honest light with no apologies offered or given. An interesting question happens at the beginning of the film, "What does Jack see in the Purple guy?" This question eventually gets answered and it is so obvious. So what did I particilarly like about this movie? See it and the question will get answered.
This movie is a non-threatening movie which can be seen with straight friends, family and co-workers and you or they will not be offended. There aren't any token sex scenes or obligatory nude scenes. Everything is tastefully done. Please see this movie, you will be able to identify with at least one of the characters. A great ensemble cast.

Other than a few kisses there is nothing to make even a strong heterosexual person be offended. This film shows the lives of a few gay men and their friendships and trials and tribulations that go along with it. As my title states and explains this movie covers many of the same hi and low lights found in ANY relationship and friendship. If you like to laugh and can feel any heart strings being tugged this movie if fun and true.

Do you want to see a movie where gays are not persecuted, insulted, discriminated or even assassinated? This it! A feel-good movie about a group of gays who argue and fight among themselves every day and still remain friends. And John Mahoney as the team's manager is the jewel in the crown.

This is such an entertaining look at friendship, dating, settling down but with the difference that it's not a chick flick but from the gay guy angle. It is superbly acted with Timothy Oliphant and Dean Cain as the standouts but all the supporting cast are great too. A few over the top camp moments but on the whole, it's humorous and touching with a definite feel good factor which is often missing when movies attempt this subject. Well worth a watch

(Neben z.B. Forrest Gump)
