Honolulu jobless numbers up in January

Honolulu's unemployment rose to 2.8 percent in January, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
There were 12,800 people out of work in Honolulu for the month, compared to 11,200 for the month of December, according to the metropolitan unemployment report.
National unemployment rates for January were higher year over year in 234 of 369 metropolitan areas, lower in 111 areas and unchanged in 24 areas. Honolulu was up from 2.2 percent in January 2007 and 2.5 percent in December 2007.
Only seven metropolitan areas including Honolulu registered jobless rates below 3 percent, compared with 22 areas with rates below 3 percent in December. The national unemployment rate in January was 5.4 percent, up from 5 percent a year earlier.
Logan, Utah-Idaho, had the lowest rate for the month, at 2.4 percent.
Two highly agricultural metropolitan areas had the highest rates: El Centro, Calif., at 16.5 percent and Merced, Calif., 13.3 percent.
