Gap Kids clothing made by child labourers: report
Posted: October 29, 2007, 11:43 AM by hollisha

Clothing giant Gap Inc. has been caught in a child labour scandal after a news investigation found children in India working at a factory that makes Gap Kids clothing.

The children, some as young as 10, are quoted in this expose in the UK Observer as saying they were sold to the factory by their families and can't leave until their debt is paid off. A video reveals a squalid factory and the labels on the clothing.

"At Gap, we firmly believe that under no circumstances is it acceptable for children to produce or work on garments," said a spokesman. "These allegations are deeply upsetting and we take this situation very seriously. All of our suppliers and their sub-contractors are required to guarantee that they will not use child labour to produce garments.

"It is clear that one of our vendors violated this agreement, and a full investigation is under way. After learning of this situation, we immediately took steps to stop this work order and to prevent the product from ever being sold in our stores. We are also convening a meeting of our suppliers where we will reinforce our prohibition on child labour."
