Every good leader knows how to view an issue from multiple sides. They take in varying viewpoints. They listen to the market, their competitors, their employees, and their customers. They use these viewpoints to craft a nuanced opinion and a complex strategy.

Empathy One of the most underrated and probably the least focused area is empathy Empathising with the client and the training your team on having clarity and empathy is up there if not the most important, Your understanding of the problem vs the clients understanding of the problem might be different and giving a solution with your perspective might not solve the issue. Train your team on empathy.

These may seem basic but necessary to being in solid command of fact. First is fact-finding; the process of distilling through the maze of things that may seem important to find only those that intuitively are. Second is the ability to handle logical deduction; putting together chains of facts to drive a hypothesis that has credibility. Third is the ability to handle metrics and math complexity (self explanatory). Finally, marshaling of evidence; putting together the chains of facts backed by solid metrics to drive conclusions from clear thought. These have helped me over the decades find "root causes"; a precursor to solution design ... it is also the most fun ... enjoy !!!

To deliver value as a management consultant relies on your ability to execute. To do this they need the basics of project management, change management, and process engineering on top of a business acumen for the area they are supporting!

Analytical or problem solving mindset is key to take up a consulting job. As a consultant, one needs to work with clients across different industries having mutually exclusive business problems. The analytical skills help the consultant understand the problem statement in a much deeper way and steer towards a holistic and sustainable solution approach. Even in an interview, it's one of the major gauging points in a candidate and naturally consulting interviews consist of case study questions to assess this skill set.

Tact Charm Insight Patience A degree of guile The last one because if you think everything a consultant is telling is the truth, they’re very good.

I think most clients already know what they should do, but are not convinced enough to invest millions. Consultants reduce uncertainty over the benefits and costs of taking a certain course of action so that clients find commitment to change. You logically break the problem down and transform a large, unmanageable, complex problem into a set of smaller and manageable issues. The better you break a problem down, the easier it becomes to see the solution. Once you find a hypothetical solution, master the art of collecting and analyzing evidence. Because you will not convince clients by outsmarting them. You can only convince clients by producing hard, solid, reliable, and accurate evidence that proves your recommendation.

I found the below very useful for consulting jobs. i) Job and client understanding; ii) Consultants can't afford free / pro bono assistance but if they can, they should educate the client team (technical, procurement, and contracts) on the hidden features of the job ToR; iii) Flexibility around timing and deliverables; iv) Ability to engage the stakeholders in a participatory way to ensure product ownership / utilization.

The best skill that a management consultant can build is to quit management consulting and actually execute on something end to end.

Listen first... Ask relevant questions... Respond, don't react. And when you respond, try to talk about 2-3 key highlights/outcomes first, and then support each of these pointer with relevant details. It doesn't help to say a story without calling out the final destination initially.

while all 5 Skills are important but I strongly feel it is the communication skill which will set you apart. We have had many instances of erudite scholars or Leaders who inspite of being uniquely knowledgeable, analytical have not really been as productive as those whose communication skills are par excellence . Amongst the best skill in communication is empathetic listening as after all the job of a consultant is to probe and dig out all hidden pain points which is only possible by building a strong bonding and possibly better by estabilishing strong communication

Asking questions you want to know the answer to, not because you want to sound clever. If we are here to help the client, we must understand them, their needs and their context / driver for change. If we present humility by asking questions so we can learn more - we build trust and we also get to provide context for any subsequent advice we might offer. Listen twice as much as you speak!

The biggest challenge for a senior management consultant is that the audience on the other side too is pretty senior and experienced in their own business and that the consultant has no formal authority to drive their actions. Persuasive and motivational style of leadership has worked best in my experience. As a management consultant, you can’t push or pull up people to accept and implement, you have to drive them from within. That requires sharp leadership skills.

Know your team Understand your teams strengths and weaknesses Don’t over complicate things, take everyone’s advice and make sure they feel heard Deadlines , timelines, deliverables, efficiency etc are all the accepted norm and they know it. Use their strengths and work on the weakness , spend your time on teaching, explaining and helping them out. They are company agnostic or maybe even industry agnostic. Before start of a project , spend time on teaching , the more you PREPARE your team the less you will spend time on correcting later. respect your team and they will put in all they have Being a leader is a tough ask, if you’re not good enough seek help, don’t underestimate the importance of being a good leader, mentor, coach.

I believe in collective leadership. Individual success is not enough. We need to be successful as a whole. I watched the movie “million miles away” There was a part during the astronaut training where they were under water as a team. They had to come to the surface as a team. Even if one individual is left behind, they will fail the test. Team work is so important and collective leadership is important to enable that.

At senior levels, you need to be seen as a trusted advisor. This is not about creating 1,000s of slides. It's about building authentic, expert based relationships with clients and always being on the other end of the phone when they have a problem / question / opportunity.

Key contributor to leadership skills in consulting are 'entrepreneurial spirit' and 'growth mindset'. In consulting it is essential to drive new topics and opportunities like an owner of a company. Identify market or client needs, develop and execute. There are too many consultants who are great at analytical thinking but who do not produce growth and outcomes. Same with 'growth mindset'. As a leader you need to be purpose driven, with an ability to improve by comparing you today to you in the past. Both together, turn you into an asset for any consultancy

Leadership is the most impactful skill for a management consultant, as she/he will need to influence the customers or stakeholders she/he will interface with , without the possibility to use the more straightforward lever ofpower or hierachical command. In addition, management consultants typical iterfaces are people being more founded in thier opinions than the average population

At senior levels you need to have the capability to contract with the client and have a clear value proposition. Listening, analysing and synthesising are key skills. From there you need to move through the gears and deliver on resource management, program delivery and course correct as needed.

Being able to lead the project team by providing clarity on the task/project, managing the clients expectations and creating an enjoyable team environment are all critical to the success of the project and the learning experience for the team

From my experience as a development strategist that has worked in several circles as a senior management consultant, there are several key skills that can make a significant impact on your work and the success of your work and delivery to your clients. Two additional skills: 1. Strategic Thinking and Planning- As a Senior Management consultant, you need to be able to think critically and strategically to address complex business challenges. Strategic planning skills are crucial for developing actionable recommendations and roadmaps to guide the client's future actions. 2. Client Relationship Management - Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients is crucial for senior management consultants.

Anyone can read the rules and perform a role, but a creative person can start with a blank slate and construct a new opportunity for others to succeed. Creativity may be found in novel toolsets or processes, by leveraging methods found in other industries, and including people who are perceived to not have the requisite knowledge to create the new.

Bill Gates once said that being a visionary is trivial. A consultant's creative force lies not within his innate abilities but comes alive through the work of his team. Even if an individual isn't confident in his creativity skills, he can leverage upon his teammates to get the job done. At the end of the day, management consulting is about the clients' needs. Creativity is just one tool that must be honed in crafting the best possible solutions.

Creativity is needed when limited resources are available. If a consulting assignment is something really new then there is no previous experience on the matter and you'll need people who can "connect the dots" and envision similarities between different "worlds". Some folks found a way to a more efficient way to cut diamonds adapting a technology used to peel peanuts using compressed air... Creativity is both an attitude (being curious) and the will to put in practice something new driven by a mandatory need. It is up to the engagement team to discover the right path and tools.

In my experience, as a senior management consultant, you don't actually have a to have a creative mindset to innovate and differentiate yourself from the competition. As a senior management consultant, you might actually be the person who brings the team together or leads the execution or focuses on either the data or continuous improvement. Someone in the Consulting Team does have to have the creative mindset, I agree, but here is the important of the Management Consultant Team working together as a complementary unit as opposed to being individual senior consultants working in silo...which I have sadly seen happen too many times...both from a client and consultant perspective.

Be open minded and open to all ideas, no matter where they're from. Sometimes the most innocuous suggestion or throwaway comment from the least expected of sources holds the key to the best creative solution.

The ability to think outside the dominant frame the client experiences offers opportunities to bring creative solutions to clients. This is a critical skill because that outside perspective, which can potentially be operationalised within an organisation has the ability to create value. It is closely linked to conceptual thinking around the missions a client organisation thinks it does, what it actually does and what it potentially can do.

"Creative people" are God's gift. Creativity leads to innovative ideas and products that are phenomenally effective in our modern world. Creativity cannot be taught in any classroom or workshops. Creative people tone their inborn skills through experiments and experiences.

As a design thinking expert myself, I can confidently claim that creativity is the soul of a successful consulting career. It takes a creative mindset to find diagnostic solutions rather than symptomatic solutions, and that leads a consultant to be a trusted advisor. In the parlance of medical science, a good consultant will treat the organization for the symptom: 'fever' (say building a new reporting dashboard), whereas a great consultant will diagnose and treat the root cause of 'fever' (e.g. fixing issues with master data which was leading to inaccurate reporting).

Creative is important, but I wouldn't put it as a top five. If you are good, you will find and hire people smarter than you and then get out of their way, remove the obstacles and let them do that which you cannot.

It is also a good idea to learn the basics of what your team is doing in order to better understand their work. This can develop feedback routines as well. Encouraging a culture where feedback is regularly provided can help identify learning gaps and opportunities for growth.

This is core to the success of senior management consultants- the reason why companies engage them! They need to be significantly ahead of the learning curve- able to anticipate the future, the novel, the new, the different. Mostly in my experience it often a case of borrowing your watch to tell you the time. In rare cases, and being specific, some futurists have stood out among the plethora of “latest fad artists”, and the “doomsayers”.

You need to have a passion for learning and being out of your comfort zone. As you move to new teams and organisations, you will always have a steep learning curve to get through.

Improve your learning agility by learning and applying skills or information in unfamiliar situations; it is critical to be open to change, seek learning opportunities, and effectively apply new knowledge across different contexts. Social learning platforms, forums, and professional networks can facilitate knowledge exchange and provide diverse perspectives on complex topics. Practice reflective time that involves regularly reflecting on your experiences, successes, and failures to derive insights and lessons learned. Cultivate curiosity actively by fostering a culture of curiosity and continuous inquiry. Mind mapping can enhance memory, clarify complex concepts, and improve the integration of new knowledge.

I think learning skills means being able to keep getting and using new knowledge well. As a top consultant, you need to love learning because business and client needs always change.

Self development is critical in the consulting world. First you are a fresh graduate from college and you find yourself presenting or reporting to senior people who are 20-30 years more experienced than you ! In such a situation it is the typical ‘swim or sink’ and the overwhelming situation makes you understand that you have to find a way to learn quickly . Secondly you have to re-skill which means learning new skill sets at various stages in the career. Some are necessitated by market conditions and some are growth opportunities. Self development is critical at that point as formal learning is rare ( at times not an option)

Effective learning skills facilitate the consultant's role as a trusted advisor, enabling them to deliver solutions, foster knowledge transfer, and guide clients through change, ensuring organizational resilience and growth.

In my client work as an external consultant, I think there is a temptation to take prior work and to have it 'fit' future client needs. I start with a 'pre-work' project sheet, where the client lists the challenges of the organization and teams, as well as the objectives of the management engagement. We then take that 'pre-work' sheet and build the consulting work and project around the client's needs, not the other way around, building the project around 'pre-existing' client work. The objectives of a med-tech company, for example, no matter what the project, are going to be different from a consumer goods multinational, so trying to build a 'one size fits all' framework and solution will not meet client needs. The key is bespoke work.

To leave their personal opinion at home. Too often the more senior the consultant the bigger the ego. What matters is data and the client's challenges.

Two things I would add here... tech & geopolitical literacy. Client managers are often plate spinning, or deeply embedded in internal matters. One thing you can do as a consultant, especially in strategy, is horizon scanning for clients. What new technology is coming? What does that mean for their business model? What does that mean for competition? The geopolitical one is 'newer'... we have been through several decades of 'quiet' geopolitics, but that period is over. Geopolitical noise is everywhere, and any consultant should be aware of its implications on supply chains and regulation in particular.

It’s important to keep in mind that you are not there to solve the problem. The people who are your clients are perfectly capable of solving problems. You are there to help ensure that they truly understand the problem—that it has been looked at from every angle, with every bias or assumption exposed. Your job is to ask the right questions. And NEVER try to be the smartest person in the room.

For me the one competency that should be in standing in first place is EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (mastering of self and awareness of others) - without that one, regardless of how good they are at strategic thinking, creativity or analytical skills, they will not be successful as consultants in the long run.

Consider these: 1. Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop long-term plans and objectives for organizations. 2. Problem-solving: Analytical skills to identify & address complex business issues. 3. Leadership: Ability to inspire & motivate to achieve goals. 4. Communication: Strong verbal & written communication .. 5. Project Management: Managing projects from initiation to completion. 6. Stakeholder Management: Build & maintain relationships with key stakeholders. 7. Data Analysis: Proficiency in analyzing & interpreting data. 8. Change Management: Expertise in guiding organizations in transition. 9. Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of specific industries & market trends. 10. Negotiation: Negotiating contracts, deals, & agreements.

In addition to what is listed, I feel Influencing skills is another that we must develop. As a consultant you are considered an expert and may be an authority in the area. With that expertise you will understand the issues and have the ability to provide creative solutions. But making the client understand and accept the proposed solutions is a challenge in itself, if you lack influencing skills. Also change management skills. Understand the organisation culture and movers and shakers guide the team to manage the change without getting involved in the implementation is also crucial.
