Career Exploration
WebQuest and Project

Long before you ever enter the job market, you must begin planning for your first career. It is important to consider your personality traits, things you enjoy doing, and things you do well. This project will get your started considering your future career possibilities.

WebQuest:

Read about John Holland's Career Personality Theory at the NC SOICC website, and then play the Career Interest Game (link below) to come to a good guess as to your career personality type.

Play the Career Interest Game  When you finish the "game," list the three groups that you would be drawn to in the order of similarity to you.  (In a tie, just choose one to list as first.)  The first letter of each of the three categories you choose becomes your Holland Code . (e.g. if you chose SOCIAL, ENTERTRISING, ARTISTIC your code would be SEA).

Review careers that are well-suited for your interests and personality type.  Review the suggestions linked to the "?" (question mark in a circle symbol) on the Career Interest Game site.  There you will see careers, as well as possible college majors that would be good for you to pursue.  For additional careers in these career interest areas, go to the SOICC website http://www.soicc.state.nc.us/SOICC/planning/hcodes.htm.

You will find great additional information about your career interest areas at BLS Career Page for teens http://www.bls.gov/k12/ or the Career Overview website http://www.careeroverview.com/careers.html. Other helpful websites are listed at the bottom of this page.

Essay Project:

After completing the above WebQuest, write a two to three page essay summarizing what you discovered. You should prepare your project in a 10-12 point, easy-to-read font. Please double-space your paragraphs.

Requirements:

1. Using the six Holland Personality types, name and describe the three traits that best describe your personality. (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, Conventional) (One or two paragraphs.)

2. Give information about the career that most interests you. (Three - five paragraphs.)

3. From the Career Overview site, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Job Outlook Site or one of the other websites that you find, tell about the educational requirements for the career of your choice. (One or two paragraphs.)

4. Using info from one of the BLS sites, give the job outlook for the profession of your choice (projected demand for people in this career.) (One or two paragraphs.)

5. In one or two paragraphs, outline your high school plans to accomplish this goal.  See the NC Graduation Requirements.

6. Finish with a closing paragraph that will tie it all together, and reflect on what you learned about yourself during this career exploration.

REMEMBER: Plaigerism is against the law. Be sure to write the report in your own words!!!
