SENSE WITH ROADS - History, Background and Officers

SENSE WITH ROADS was formed in 1991, following the government decision to abandon plans to improve the road network in south London, and the decision of Croydon Council to promote Tramlink regardless of the adverse effects on the road network.

The membership of SWR is based in south London, although we have members over a wide area of London and nearby.

SENSE WITH ROADS presses for the implementation of policies with respect to roads and traffic which will make the system safe and efficient for all road users. We have extensive knowledge of the road network of the South London area, and expertise in possible developments. Croydon Tramlink is a speciality. We are interested in motorists, buses, commercial traffic, pedestrians and cyclists and in the development of roads which facilitate the movement of all of these groups of people. We have a particular interest in the assessment of traffic calming, bus priority and cycling measures.

Over the past 16 years, SENSE WITH ROADS has made numerous representations to Croydon Council and other highway authorities over the way they manage the road network.
SWR has objected to traffic management orders, and appeared at public enquiries. SWR opposed the Croydon Tramlink Bill in Parliament. SWR has successfully fought off proposed Controlled Parking Zones.

SENSE WITH ROADS has built up a bank of experience and expertise which we use to press for the road network to be made more convenient, safe and easy to use for all travellers.
