Hacking a PSP Slim with a Datel Battery Tool
by Waffle Slayer on Feb 29 2008
This tutorial is the way I hacked my PSP Slim. There are other ways out there so find a way that is suitable for you. With this method you will have to buy a "pandora battery" from a retailer. I used the Datel Battery Tool. They make them in two versions: phat and slim. Mine was $29 and I had to have it shipped from Canada to the United States. So, it was about $46 with exepdited shipping. You can also create your own pandora battery and there are several places to find out how.

Preperation
Make sure your PSP is fully charged. In the future when upgrading custom firmware your PSP will always need to be 80%+ charged. You should have the TOTALNewbi-easyInstaller software downloaded onto your computer and ready to access.

Here is a list of things needed according to this tutoral:
-Computer running Windows XP with the software 'TOTALNewbi-easyInstaller' on it. The download is about 130mb.
-A PSP Slim.
-A comptabile memory stick pro duo stick. I believe for it to be compatible it needs to be 1 or 2gb, say "PRO Duo" and "Magic Gate" and either be Sony, SanDisk or Lexmark.
-Memory card reader or usb cable.

Preparing the Memory Card

(For bigger picture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qW-sZkqMeo)

First we'll get the memory card prepared. I don't have a PRO Duo card reader slot on my desktop so I will be using my PSP as the reader and have a usb cable running from the computer to the PSP.

1.) Go into the 'TOTALNewbi-easyInstaller' directory and run the program named 'START'.
2.) Hit Enter. Now go to your PSP and into System Settings and click Format Memory Stick. Hit Yes two times and O to go back.
3.) While still using the PSP scroll up to USB Connection and press X.
4.) Go back to your computer and press enter. The program will ask you to enter in the letter of the drive on your computer that represents the memory card. Enter that (eg. E) and hit Enter. It will ask you to insert disk for the letter you entered. You're already in USB Connection so press Enter again. The program will verify the memory card and it will take a few moments.
5.) Hit Enter when the Volume Label comes up to your screen. Now it tells you that you're about to format the card. Press Y and Enter. This takes a minute or so to do.
6.) The program instructs you to remove the memory card and then stop USB Connection. So, remove the memory card and press O on your PSP. Go back to the computer and press Enter. Now go back to your PSP and put the memory card back in and press X on USB Connection. Back at the computer you will press Enter to go to the next step.
7.) A menu will pop up with five seperate choices. This tutorial is specifically for the PSP Slim so enter 4 and hit Enter. The program will put the files on to the memory card at this point. Should take less than a minute.
8.) Some new text comes up and asks if you're sure. Press Y and hit Enter. Now it asks to write MS BOOT CODE. Press Enter. If all is well you should see the credits to the people who made this possible and just hit Enter again to close it out.

Installing the Firmware

(For a bigger picture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEKV4ZxLWDU)

1.) With the PSP completely shut off and 100% charged put the memory card into the PSP. Take out the original battery and put in the Datel battery. Put on the battery cover so that the Datel battery won't fall out during the installation.
2.) With the Datel battery tool your PSP will automatically power on. Notice the green light. We're in service mode right now. The PSP Slim video drivers are not compatible with the program we used to create the memory card so you should see a black screen barely lit.
3.) Press X once. If you followed the steps correctly while creating the memory stick then the indictator light on the PSP will start blinking orange. This lets us know that the custom firmware is being read and is installing onto your PSP.
4.) This process takes a few moments. When its done the screen will be completely black and the orange light will not be flashing.
5.) Remove the Datel battery and install the original and boot up your PSP.

Fin.

great tutorial. one of the best i've seen.
one question: do you use the battery right out of the box or do you have to charge it first?

Josh on Mar 09 2008 08:16 pm
oh and by battery i meant the datel tool battery

Waffle Slayer on Mar 09 2008 10:11 pm
Good question.

You can use the datel battery right out of the box.

I used it for two different slims back to back.

I LOVE YOU.

Thank you very much for this tutorial!

This is without a doubt the easiest, best information on how to put custom firmware on a psp that I have seen in two weeks of reading forum entry after forum entry. Thanks for explaining it in such a way that anyone can understand and DO it!

Brad Man on Mar 26 2008 11:41 am
Does this work with 3.80 regular firmware

Funkyboy on Mar 27 2008 12:15 pm
Yah I also have a psp slim with firmware 3.80 regular firmware and I really want custom firmware!!!

kaufdrop on Mar 29 2008 10:17 pm
what was your ofw that you had om your psp slim?

Brad Man on Mar 30 2008 11:24 am
I had 3.80 ofw

C Berry on Mar 31 2008 02:36 pm
hey im kinda new to this stuff, and your guide was exelent, and i was sucessful in downgrading, and getting the CFW i was just wondering if u can now reformat the memeory card, or do u have to keep the documents that the .exe program placed on your psp

Thanks

Waffle Slayer on Mar 31 2008 07:34 pm
@Brad Man: It doesn't matter what firmware the PSP has on it.

@C Berry: I would leave on most of the stuff the program puts on there, to be honest. Just in case.

Brad Man on Apr 01 2008 07:32 pm
Waffle Slayer you might want to put the step where you extract 'TOTALNewbi-easyInstaller'

Waffle Slayer on Apr 01 2008 09:52 pm
Is that an April Fools, Brad Man? I think if you don't know how to extract files onto your computer then you shouldn't be doing this tutorial...

Brad Man on Apr 01 2008 10:52 pm
It is totaly a April Fools why not!!ha ha ha!!

Xyann on Apr 07 2008 03:36 pm
You have done a grate job my friend you have helped me with sometihng i beent tyring to do for a while thankxXXXXXxX

TOM on Apr 09 2008 05:54 pm
do we have to change battery or just uuse the battery that we got from the psp box

Waffle Slayer on Apr 09 2008 06:49 pm
@TOM: In order to install the custom firmware that you prepared on your memory card, you'll need to use either the Datel Battery Tool or a Pandora Battery that you (or someone else) made from an original psp battery.

Jim-E on Apr 14 2008 03:17 pm
So if I'm getting a new memory card I have to format that one too, right? And I only have to do the memory card part all over again, but not the CFW part, correct?

Waffle Slayer on Apr 14 2008 06:17 pm
@Jim-E: If you have already installed custom firmware on your PSP then whenever you get a new memory card I suggest that you transfer over the core files from the other memory card to the new one. Everything should be fine.

Lucky on Apr 25 2008 03:52 pm
is there a way to go to 3.90m33 instead of 3.71m33

and how long did the battery take to ship,i just placed an order last night

Waffle Slayer on Apr 25 2008 05:45 pm
@Lucky: I don't know if there is a newer version of the software used to create the memory stick to have a more up to date cfw version. However, its not hard to upgrade to 2.80 m-2 and then use the psp to do the rest of the work since you can use the psp update feature without having to download anymore files onto your pc.

As for the battery, it took about 3 days but I paid extra for shipping.

Lucky on Apr 26 2008 08:24 am
did you order from codejunkies.com

Waffle Slayer on Apr 26 2008 09:00 pm
@Lucky: I bought it from http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/zz-psp-btslim2.html

It's a Canadian site but a couple friends referred them to me.

CRaZY tha CoBRA on Apr 30 2008 12:16 pm
LoL ... Steve told me to come here. So, if I brick my PSP and can't fix it, I'm making him take me to you so I can eat waffles. he he he.

But nah, wassup mang, where ya been ? I really didn't need to buy all this junk, I coulda just got you fux0rs to do it. Anyway, may need the TOOL batt later on. Nice price, good investment for tha PSP.

Waffle Slayer on Apr 30 2008 03:14 pm
@Cobra: What up man? Yah, the tool is good for getting the psp modded and then using it to access the 1.5 kernel for the slim. A worthy investment indeed.

If you have problems then just holler at Steven and we'll get that shit working for you.

ME on May 03 2008 06:02 am
does this work with 3.95 and a 2gb memory card

Waffle Slayer on May 03 2008 02:06 pm
@ME: It does work with 3.95.

The memory card depends. As from my article: A comptabile memory stick pro duo stick. I believe for it to be compatible it needs to be 1 or 2gb, say "PRO Duo" and "Magic Gate" and either be Sony, SanDisk or Lexmark.

help on May 13 2008 02:37 pm
my psp is getting only black screen now but it has a gren light and it shows a recharging light sometimes .. if it is bricked how can i unbrick it.

Waffle Slayer on May 13 2008 06:29 pm
@help: Most likely it isn't bricked.

Just redo the steps exactly in the video. Be patient. :)

If it is bricked, then it is option #5.

CRaZYthaCoBRA on May 14 2008 05:32 pm
BTW... I borrowed your tutorial and gave credit. I've added a lot of stuff, check it out...

Hi Waffle Slayer:
Can i use a 4gb SanDisk ProDuo MagicGate Memory Stick to Install the MMS???

NotFat on Jun 24 2008 09:29 am
Definately one of the best tutorials out there. Kudos for making it.

Shame youtube took down the first vid though. It would've been a lot more easier to follow through than it already is.

HappyNoob on Jun 30 2008 08:28 am
Thanks Waffle Slayer for the excellent tutorial! Just got my Datel Tool Battery from "GP2XSTORE.COM", charged it, followed your steps and got CFW working without any troubles. I'm recommending your tutorial to my friends who also just got new slims. :D Thanks again!

Andrew on Jul 26 2008 10:12 pm

The Datel One.

salimpsp on Jul 28 2008 11:34 pm
can you use paypal to pay for the battery and can this put cfw on my god of war psp

salimpsp on Jul 29 2008 04:04 pm
can you go into the recovery menu so you can play isos

Waffle Slayer on Aug 03 2008 02:21 am
Eduardo: It should only work with a 1gb or 2gb stick.

gotegenks: You can use ANY firmware version. Like 4.01, etc.

Andrew: You can use any pandora battery(thats what the datel battery tool is just sold commercially)

salimpsp: You can do this with any psp slim(star wars, god of war, etc)

salimpsp: You'd need to figure out if the merchant accepts PayPal. and the games downloaded are in .iso and .cso format. Its just like using ofw but its cfw.
