Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Jan. 26

In a vote that ended Jan. 26, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Jan. 21.

The Enquirer has mailed certificates for fall and winter winners through Dec. 15 to athletic departments. The next round will go out in mid-February.

The Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners.

Ohio boys basketball team: Moeller – The Crusaders defeated St. Xavier and Mentor, both on the road, to improve to 14-1 on the year.

Ohio girls basketball team: West Clermont – The Wolves responded to their first loss in nearly a month by topping Canal Winchester 51-40 and Lebanon 55-53 in overtime.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball team: Scott – Scott defeated Calvary Christian 74-36 on the road before a 70-45 victory against Bishop Brossart.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball team: Simon Kenton – Simon Kenton moved to 14-5 overall after beating St. Henry 58-41 and Bishop Brossart 56-39.

Boys winter team: Moeller ice hockey – Against St. Xavier at the Heritage Bank Center, Moeller had a comeback in the third period to take down the Bombers 4-2.

Girls winter team: Scott archery – Scott scored a 3,300 at its “Let ‘Em Fly” Invitational to take first place.

Ohio big-school boys basketball: Kemper Atha, Monroe – He had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the team’s win over Edgewood.

Ohio small-school boys basketball: Aboubacar Soumahoro, Spencer – He had 18 points, six rebounds and three assists in the team’s win over Norwood, then 17 points and seven rebounds in a win over DePaul Cristo Rey.

Ohio big-school girls basketball: Maddie Fender, West Clermont – She scored 22 points, including five three-pointers, along with eight rebounds, a steal and a block in an overtime win over Lebanon.

Ohio small-school girls basketball: Christina Murphy, Fayetteville-Perry – The freshman recorded her first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds against Manchester.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys basketball: Nathan Vinson, Highlands – He had 23 points and 11 rebounds in a key district win over Newport Central Catholic.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls basketball: Rachel Shewmaker, Bishop Brossart – She scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a win over Boone County.

Ohio boys bowler: Landen Fischer, Goshen – He shot games of 188 and 279 in a win over Blanchester.

Ohio girls bowler: Karsen Power, Ross – She led the Rams in scoring in two of their three matches as they went 3-0 for the week.

Northern Kentucky boys bowler: Antonio Williams, Boone County – He finished second in the Region 6 singles championship, averaging 232.4 in qualifying to get the top seed, then losing 238-227 to Cooper’s Tyler Ketron in the championship match. He qualified for the state tournament.

Northern Kentucky girls bowler: Alyssa Bechtol, Dixie Heights – She won the Region 6 singles championship with a 247 in the championship match after easily gaining the top seed with a 218.6 average in qualifying. She also led the Colonels to the team championship to qualify for state.

Gymnast: Maggie Hartong, Anderson – The freshman helped the Anderson team to a third-place finish at the Elk Invitational. As an individual athlete, Hartong finished 6th on floor, 11th on vault, 15th in all-around, 25th on bars and 31st on beam.

Ice hockey player: Jack Davis, St. Xavier – The sophomore kicked off all scoring for the Bombers this weekend as he tallied the first goal against Moeller on Saturday. Davis added another goal on Sunday against Indian Hill Winter Club to help the team to a 2-1 win. The forward now has 17 goals this season.

Ohio boys swimmer/diver: Connor Wood, Badin – He won the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley and helped two relays to victory in a meet with Mariemont and West Clermont.

Ohio girls swimmer/diver: Norah Smyth, Ursuline – She won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.92 seconds at the Lions’ senior night meet against St. Ursula.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys swimmer/diver: Sam Menker, Simon Kenton – He won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races at the Kenton County Championships while helping the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams to victory.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls swimmer/diver: Olivia Helson, Simon Kenton – She won the 100-yard butterfly at the Kenton County Championships with a time of 1:17.56.

Ohio boys wrestler: Marsel Sabirdjanov, Mason – The Mason senior pinned all five opponents at the 132-pound class at the Berkshire Battle for the Belt.

Northern Kentucky boys wrestler: Landon Evans, Ryle – Evans had three of four wins by pinfall, including in the finals, to finish first at the South Oldham Dragon Invitational.

Ohio girls wrestler: Ariana Hale, Middletown – The freshman became Middletown’s first girls tournament champion, winning the 115-pound bracket at the Scott Newburg Memorial.

Boys archer: Ari Edmonds, Scott – The sophomore shot a 282 with 14 10s for a third-place finish among high school boys at the Scott tournament.

Girls archer: Lexus Goff, Scott – The sophomore shot a 282 with 16 10s and finished fifth in girls competition at the Let Em Fly Tournament this weekend.
