There are about 88,000 personal finance sites on the Internet that will tell you a lot more about investing than we will ever know.  But one thing we know for sure: brokerage fees have gone through the roof following the stock meltdown.

The small investor needs to be certain to read and understand all of the fees and charges that will be applied to his or her account. Brokerage houses no longer have any interest in dealing with small accounts and this attitude is reflected in their fees.

In general, long-term investments in publicly-traded equities (stocks, in other words) are the best possible use of your money and the best security for you and your family.  The key phrase here is long-term. The days of the wealthy day trader are long gone.

Unless you're a high net worth individual and you also happen to be a financial wizard, you should not dabble in initial public offerings, private placements or other esoterica.  But you already knew that, didn't you?.

Mutual funds are supposedly the investment of choice for those who'd rather not be bothered with details but as the market-timing scandals have demonstrated, mutual fund investors are at the mercy of all kinds of rapacious individuals they never even knew existed.
