I just read a nice article about the quarter’s numbers of MicroStrategy at IBN which also mentioned the BlackBerry compatibility:

Latest Release of MicroStrategy 8(TM) Software

The latest release of MicroStrategy 8 software was made generally available on July 18, 2008. The new release offers enhancements to MicroStrategy Mobile(TM), MicroStrategy Integrity Manager(TM), and integration with SAP BI. In addition, MicroStrategy now offers interactive reporting and analysis on the Apple(R) iPhone(TM).

The new MicroStrategy 8 release offers a broad range of user-friendly features to MicroStrategy Mobile. MicroStrategy Mobile users can now access a host of new data views for dashboards and reports on their BlackBerry(R) smartphones. Users can reformat reports and save the formatting changes to share with other mobile users. In addition, reports can be displayed incrementally on the BlackBerry, which gives users greater speed in viewing exceptionally large reports.

So I did some research on the whole MicroStrategy products and the features you can use with your BlackBerry. MicroStrategy Mobile is well-suited to meet the BI needs of a broad range of mobile workers:

  • An executive from a large financial services company monitors the organization’s top financial metrics and makes time-sensitive decisions that impact the company’s bottom line while out of the country.
  • A retail buyer accesses merchandise sales data to determine what is selling and not selling in specific stores to support purchasing and inventory reallocation discussions with store managers.
  • A pharmaceutical salesperson reviews the latest market share reports, prescription sales, and inventory data to prepare for sales calls.
  • A manufacturer’s field technician provides enhanced customer service on-site by checking the customer’s historical service record and product availability before scheduling a follow-up service call.
  • A marketing executive from a Fortune 500® company evaluates the latest marketing campaign analytics while meeting with the advertising agency to make key decisions on future marketing expenditures.

Here are some screen shots:

New Free Solar Charger for BlackBerry Unboxing Photos

Solar Charger for BlackBerry Wireless Handheld
My review about the Solar Charger for BlackBerry seems to be quite famous among BlackBerry users.

It was so good that the manufacturer contacted me and asked if I would want a free device because I wrote such a nice review. Well, of course I said “Yeah man!” :)

Though I already have the black one with an orange stripe (seems to be kind of limited as they don’t have this anymore) I could use another one as well to charge my BlackBerry and my Bluetooth GPS receiver at the same while I am hiking or biking and tracking my GPS positions.

The new Solar Charger they sent me is black as well but it comes with a nice grey stripe. So it doesn’t have this “limited feeling” but who cares… Anyway, I thought it might be a nice thing to just post some unboxing photos of this one. So here they are:

That’s how the original box looks like.

Fancy layout inside :)

Everything in there: extension cord, power adapter for charging the solar charger’s battery in an emergency at your power plug, adapters for all supported phones (incl. BlackBerry, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, SonyEricsson).

I decided to make a serious real life testing with the old BlackBerry 8700v. I am gonna flatten the battery (actually just play around until the battery is empty) and then charge it completely from scratch. So we can see how long that takes. Stay tuned for this new article and subscribe to our free blog feed!

I also found a nice hardware review site which is reviewing a lot of hardware gadgets. You can find a lot of high quality hardware reviews there. Check it out: Reviews and tests from the best sources Testfreaks collects it all!

There is going to be a new TaskMailer version released very soon. The beta program is running for more than a month now and the program was very reliable since the beginning.

Here is the official description and feature list of the program’s latest version 1.1.0:

TaskMailer is a small program which allows you to create and email a task (todo) in the fastest way you can imagine. The current features include:

  • Easily create and email a task with one program.
  • Task email attachment formats: iCal and vCal.
  • Compatible with desktop task applications including but not limited to Microsoft® Outlook®, iCal®, Entourage®, and more.
  • Email a task anyone!
  • Optional: save the task in your BlackBerry’s internal task database.
  • Task preferences which can be entered: name, priority, status, due date, category / categories, notes.
  • Fast access: by assigning one of the BlackBerry’s softkey to TaskMailer the program is accessible with just one click. More here.

New beta version 1.1.0 features:

  • Slimmer design.
  • Task can now be mailed out with just 3 clicks.
  • Everything is in one screen (makes it faster to use).
  • All settings are saved for convenience (status, priority, due date, categories, save to BlackBerry, iCal or vCal format).
  • Hotkey (ENTER) to send a task quickly.
  • vCal attchments are now attached as “vcal.vcs” file instead of using “vcal.ics”.

While it is in beta stage it is free to use this application. I guess, all beta testers will also get a huge discount on this nice app once it is released to public. However, beta version 1.2.0 will come to public soon, so this will be very interesting!

Can the iPhone replace the BlackBerry?

July 31st, 2008

Stupid question, I know. But the guys at Computerworld Mobile & Wireless wrote:

One of the biggest stories behind the release of the iPhone 3G — and the iPhone 2.0 firmware update for first-generation iPhones — was the inclusion of features designed for use in business environments. While many analysts and enterprise users have argued in recent weeks about whether the iPhone can replace Research In Motion’s BlackBerry as the prevailing smart phone for business, little has been said about the tools and processes that Apple offers systems administrators to actually deploy and manage iPhones at work.[...]

I don’t think the BlackBerry can be replaced by the iPhone. What do you think? Please leave a comment if you feel you want to share your thoughts with us :)
